Portal lessons from 2024:
1. Some good players will leave via the portal
2. Good players can also be found in the portal
3. If you have to replace too many players in the portal, it will take time to blend them into a team.
4. Not all players who succeed in moving up will end up with playing time, but some will do very well
5. Not all players who find a new home will be happier, but some will be
6. A portion of the players who enter the portal will not be able to replace the scholarship they gave up
The portal math works out that, if the number of players who have used up eligibility is about equal to the number of incoming Freshmen, then for every Ohio player who enters the portal, Ohio will be able to take one from the portal to replace him. Based on the current status of only 2 players in the portal, Ohio won't be able to take many from the portal this year, unless they take a less than usual number of Freshmen. I expect there to be a lot of players in the portal, so Ohio may opt to take a smaller Freshman class this year, and take players from the portal instead.
Note that OHio will also have to reduce the number of walkons this year. I count 113 on the roster, meaning 28 walkons. That will need to drop to 20 walkons to get a roster size of 105.
