As I'm sitting here watching Temps giving way to Fiami, I'm thinking of the possibility that OU won't be going to a bowl game unless they beat Kent Friday.  For several years, if a conference that had a tie-in with a didn't have enough bowl-eligible teams to meet the commitment, the bowl would have to pick a 7-win team over 6-win teams in order to fill the spot.  This year, however, the NCAA has finally recognized that bowls are about butts in the seats and eyes watching TV (i.e., money) instead of rewarding teams for having good (or great) seasons.  Now, bowls can pick 6-win teams over 7+ win teams.  This means MAC teams that aren't picked for one of the three tie-in bowls or two secondary bowls could be left out.  It could happen this year.  Although the PAC-10 will be 2-3 teams shy of meeting commitments, other Big Six conferences could more than make up the slack.  The ACC has one more bowl-eligible team than its commitments; the Big Least, the Big 12 and the WAC could each be +2 and the SEC and CUSA each could be +1.

This could put the Cats in a bind if they don't beat Kent Friday.  Fiami and NIU would be guaranteed bowl games.  Temps (8-4) would likely get the third bid because it's in a major TV market.  If the secondary bowls don't come through, 8-4 OU could be left competing with a 6-6 Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, Colorado, or even UTEP for a bowl berth.  Guess who would win that.

Beating Kent has even more significance.

As I recall, aren't there 35 bowls requiring 70 participants?  I thought I read somewhere that it looked like there weren't enough bowl-eligible teams to fill all the slots.  As of right now, the Sun Belt Conference has no bowl eligible teams.  At worst with an 8-4 record I'd have to think we're going to a bowl.  That being said, beat Can't State and the rest takes care of itself!  GO CATS!!

I read that too on Rivals.com but, as usual with them, the headline was misleading.  If you add up their prediction regarding the bowl eligible teams for each conference and the indies, they have 71.  There could be others, like maybe Georgia who has to beat GA Tech this week to get to 6 wins.  And if Houston (5-6) beats Texas Tech (6-5) this weekend, CUSA gets another.  The Cats just need to take care of business Friday and they won't have to worry about it.

When you break down the conferences, you have to consider there also are 4 at-large BCS slots.

There are 64 bowl-eligible teams right now. There are 10 power conference teams that could become eligible still, although the probability for most of those 10 teams is low (some teams are 4-6 and have to win twice; other teams have very tough opponents to get to 6-6). There are relatively few other possibilities for new bowl eligible teams in other conferences: Idaho is 5-6, Louisiana Tech is 4-6, Houston is 5-6. Other than that, there is Western Michigan at 5-6 and four Sun Belt teams at 5-5 or 4-6.

I don't think we have too much to worry about, but it's hard to say for sure. I'm guessing there will be 71 or 72 bowl eligible teams when things are all said and done. I think the MAC will get at least four and certainly Ohio should be among the four picked even with a loss to Kent State, which should not happen!

There are 64 teams who already qualify for a bowl right now and there are 20 more who have not been eliminated.  Some of those play each other so there will be more than 71 in my opinion, probably closer to 75.  Anybody but Sun Belt teams (they have none so far, but will probably end up with 3 or 4 with 6 wins) will be picked above a MAC team so there really are no quarantees at this point in time if we lose.

Ohio loses to Kent and another factor would be if Toledo grabs that 8th win against CMU. That would put Toledo, Ohio, Miami, Temple all at 8 wins. Miami would be in of course as the East Champ. Toledo would have a victory over Ohio to hang its hat on. Ohio did beat Temple though and with their slide to finish the season they would have to be last in line. Media market is one thing but will their fans travel any better than a MAC school? Not to a game outside the East Coast. Ohio is still looking good for a bowl with a loss to Kent, not a lock but good.

The rule was 6-5 until they moved to the 12 game schedule. NCAA wanted 7-5 and got it with the cavet that a conference was permitted to fill its tie-ins with a 6-6 team otherwise couldn't use a 6-6. Backup agreements have worked the same way, a backup conference must provide a spare 7 win team. Now backups trigger at 6 wins. That is why the big announcement by the MAC office this year about the backup deal. If the SEC or Big East so much as blink the MAC sends a school to the PapaJohn's Bowl. One of the trends in scheduling has BCS conferences playing FCS schools to become bowl eligible at 6-6 and unless its a special rivalry not playing BCS schools out of conference. That is like the natural unfair advantage BCS schools have in basketball loading up with easy home wins. It makes the SOS of BCS leagues look better than they really are and leads to 8 or 9 bowl eligible teams in a 12 team BCS conference. The MAC is 5 or 6 bowl eligible every year without the scheduling advantages of playing 8 games at home.

If you aren't able to beat a 4-7 Kent State team with a spot in the MAC title game motivating you, are you really a bowl team?
If ever Miami did OUr team a favor, it was last night. If the players were watching, they had to be realizing from nearly the get-go that Friday's game is HUGE; no backing into the championship game. If you're a competitor, don't you want it that way?
And not to put down Kent State (I think a lot of Doug Martin and recognize that his guys “come at you") BUT: The fact is, the Flashes are struggling; they’ve lost seven games. Given the stakes, does anyone really care about going to a bowl game if we aren’t championship-caliber enough to defeat the Flashes under the circumstances?

And Make no mistake: They will be motivated; they will come at us. They want to send Doug Martin out a winner. And frankly, I wish the Flashes were playing someone else under the circumstances, because I’d be rooting for them to win.

Said this last night.  I think we might be better off having Miami win, because we should come out with something to prove against Kent.

I must be confused.  From the title of this thread I thought it was about mh55 and those temples.

Good call.

If we don't beat Kant, we will not (and should not) be in a Bowl game.

We'll be in a bowl if we don't beat Kent, I think.

But the point is moot.  Just beat Kent.

I was somewhat glad that Fiami beat Temps last night.  Although it would've been nice to have won the division outright, if your team is playing the day after Thanksgiving before maybe 5,000 people at 11:00 in the morning on a cold, wet, maybe icy day, they should have something on the line to play for.

GIVE 'EM HELL OHIO!!!!
