I still remember our first bowl invite from the Sun Bowl in 1962. There had been a lot of talk that we would get a bowl bid toward the end of that season. Then we lost two of our last three games -- 7-6 to BG and then 31-22 to Iowa State -- to finish 8-2. We actually played a fairly good game against ISU and had chances to win. They had a very good QB who made some key completions that doomed us toward the end of the game.
After that Iowa State loss, I was really dejected. It looked like we had blown our chances of a bowl bid. However, there was a slight chance we would still be selected, according to the local media. I remember when the selection date arrived (a Sunday, I think it was) I stayed glued to the radio (WATH, I believe) all afternoon long and listened for the hoped for announcement. As the afternoon wore on, I became somewhat desponded and was starting to feel that we were going to be passed over. Then, all of a sudden, they broke into some music that was playing -- breaking news -- Ohio had been selected to play in the Sun Bowl! I was so excited!! I ran downstairs and told my parents and my sisters! We were going to our very first bowl!!! There was probably not a more excited person in all of Athens.
Perhaps, you can understand why, for sentimental reasons, I'd really love to go back to the Sun Bowl. On top of that, it's one bowl that my wife says we could probably go to.
I hope I haven't bored you folks, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
