Before I sail off into the sunset (hopefully not permanently), I've got to ask does the Sun Belt have better contracts than the MAC set up by cleverer lawyers? I just don't get it. Please 'splain it to me.

Two of the spots are locked (New Orleans and Mobile). If it wasn't FIU in the LC it would have been MAC-on-MAC crime.

Are you in bad health OCF or just saying in general?

AND BTW - how in the hell did that happen?

Thanks for the concern. I used a bad figure of speech. I'm now aboard a cruise ship and when it sails in a few hours, I'll be out of contact pretty much for four days until we reach Hawaii. Though I can cheat a little and use my Kindle to web surf free while at sea that's not a pretty experience for the faint of heart! :-)

I still don't understand the answers to my basic question. If FIU had beaten MTSU, thereby making MTSU non-bowl eligible i don't see how even that would have lead to MAC-on-MAC crime? There lots of other possibilities.

Simple....SBC has 2 set bowls...NOLA bowl, and godaddy.com bowl......Troy and FIU tied for the conference since we dont have a championship and MTSU beat FIU....NOLA did not want FIU because FIU does not travel, not to menchion their last home game had a attendance of 16,000 with the bowl reps there to see..... FIU has to get a bowl since they are the  co-champs. Both NOLA and Mobile passed on FIU because of poor attendance so Detroit jumps on them since they have no one else.....NOLA picks Troy since we Travel well and have a very established fan base, and MTSU Travels well too. Mobile had Troy last year and NOLA had MTSU. They wanted to switch it up this year.

Geography.  The 6-6 schools are within driving distance of the bowls they're in, so they are more likely to fill more seats.  There probably wouldn't be a whole bunch of Florida people at either Mobile or Nawlins, so having them go to Detroit isn't that big of loss.  But MTSU at Mobile and Troy at Nawlins will likely sell more tickets.

As for Temps, it wouldn't surprise me that they turned down Nawlins.  They took the closest bowl -- DC -- last year and got a better payout than they would at NO.  With the added expense and probably fewer fans in the stands, they might not have thought it worthwhile.  The Sun Bowl would've at least given them a bigger payout.  The cynic in me also says it frees Al Golden to take the MN or Vandy job if offered.

Thanks, AT. Makes sense. What would have happened do you think if FIU had beaten MTSU? Would the MAC had to ask the NCAA to reconsider their waiver denial for ASU?

Good question! I have no idea...There would probably be more switching around....Remember The NOLA bowl is typically a bowl For SBC vs C-USA, and C-USA traded bowls!

I won't believe the arrogant SOBs at Temple turned down a bowl bid until I see concrete proof. It doesn't fit that school's M.O. They just want you to think that because it makes them feel superior to the rest of the MAC riff-raff.

I agree and will be amazed if we find out Temple turned down a shot at a bowl. Turning down a bowl would likely be devastating for recruiting - especially when you're going to be recruiting against a MAC school that will be telling kids "are you sure you want to choose a school that doesn't value postseason opportunities?"

But as arrogant as some of them have been on this board (and after reading theirs), I can't help but chuckle. Plenty of UNMISTAKABLE couch sitting and TV watching during bowl season for the Owls!

Several have posted something to the effect that Temple football could be doomed.  If Nova joins the Big East, no ACC invite and Golden leaves…they may just pack it in. Some feel they will never generate enough fans playing in the MAC.  It has to be twice as expensive to field a team in Philly.  Renting out Lincoln Financial for the weekly friends and family game is not cheap.  Busing players to and from practice etc.

I get the biggest chuckle out of all the comments about Sun Belt or MAC tems generating alot of travlers for Bowl games.  Don't get me wrong, the wife and I are going...but do ANY of these schools sell more than maybe 2k for the bowl games?  I'd be surprised...

Folks, Troy is a real football program...easily the most established program in the Sun Belt.  Those attendance numbers for Mobile are great!  It's a great opportunity to go up against them.

Trojan, obviously those of us in MAC country really don't know what kind of following you have.  18k is obviusly great for any team.  I guess you guys will have the home field advantage!  See you there.

Could be.  They were more or less drummed out of the Big East because they couldn't keep up on the field or in the stands.  Rutgers -- which wasn't setting the world on fire at the time -- led the charge to boot them out.  They're basically an afterthought in Philly to all the pro teams, Penn State and maybe Rutgers.  Maybe UMass joining the MAC for football will help them, but I don't see Temps as being a MAC fixture even five years from now.  They'll either need a more upscale conference or drop football altogether; doing a BYU may be doable, but getting the types of schools that would draw week in a week out (like PSU, Rutgers, Navy, Pitt and Maryland) would not make it easy to be a winner.

According to the Philly Inquirer, the win over Temps was the deciding factor:

The third spot was locked too.  Since MTSU pulled off their upset, it gave the Sun Belt a 3rd bowl eligible team.  Sun Belt has a backup agreement with Pizza Pizza that if Big Ten can't send a team and they have a 3rd team eligible, Sun belt fills it.

Long story short, blame MTSU. (but at least it did avoid MAC vs. MAC)
