Should be an interesting matchup: strength vs. strength; weakness vs. weakness.  Their O is 25th in the nation and s our D is 26th; our O is 92nd and their D is 91st.  Hope the Cats open up the playbook and let the offense have some fun.

I'm looking forward to the game as well.  Unfortunately I won't be able to travel to the game but I hope it to be a great game.

I spent a lot of time growing up in Mobile.  I know they take football seriously in Alabama, as seriously as we do in Ohio.

Troy has come a long way in a short time.  Should be a great game.

The game lists at 325,000 and that might be the cash payout to visiting teams or a smaller block of tickets required by the school to sell.

That'd be great to break even on the game. I know there have been concerns about coming up with the money to go to bowl games. But I don't feel like we send a positive message to recruits by turning down an opportunity to play in a bowl game. Then, of course, there is also the publicity and positive exposure for the university. And it's exciting to have the opportunity to play in a bowl game. It's an excitement that many fans of bigger schools don't understand. They take bowl bids for granted.

In the meantime, have any of you seen these cool shirts yet?

If I have understood this correctly in the past, the $325K that each school receives is SOLEY dependent upon the number of tickets each school sales.  Tickets are $40 each, so for each school to get their 'guarenteed cash", they have to sell in excess of 8,000 tickets, THROUGH THE SCHOOLS TICKET OFFICE.  All tickets sold from the "official site" or other ticket venues (TicketMaster, StubHub, etc) are not counted towards the 8K.   Then cut expenses out of that and the conference (Sun Belt rules anyway) gets the remainder to split among the other member schools, whatever that ends of being.  Bottom line is that this will be the third time Troy has been to the New Orleans bowl and it would not surprise me if we have ever made a dime on this game.

I hope 8 million Ohio fans come to this game, enjoy the Big Easy, and have a terriffic time.  If you have never been to New Orleans, please give it a chance.  If you can't do it New Orleans,  you don't need to be doing it!!!

I figure the ticket selling aspect is why the university is giving such a cut rate deal to the students to come, basically the students are paying for the ticket and the university is hoping this will get them closer to their allotment.

I was at the ticket office this morning to sign up and the phone did not stop ringing while I was there.  We're going to turn New Orleans green*.

*Tulane doesn't count.

So...what is Troy "ALL ABOUT"?  I hear their defense is the strength of the team.

How do the Bobcats match up?

We've heard all season about how Bates has not been 100%.  Will he be 100% for the bowl game?

How does Ohio's O-Line match up with their D-Line/linebackers?  What about Ohio's D-Line/'backers vs. their O-Line?

What about Troy's QB?  Is he mobile/is he a threat to run?  What is their offensive strength?

What about their special teams?  I don't remember kick/punt return touchdown this season from the Bobcats (maybe I missed it/them?).  Can we get one in this game?

Who wins the turnover battle?

Any other thoughts on the game?

Definitely wrong about the defense being Troy's strength. Little experience and injuries have wrecked havic on our defense. Were around 100th in total defense. If you could say the defense had any strength it would be in the trentches. Troy is 11th in Sacks and 17th in Tackles for Loss. Troy is 27th in offense and does most of the damage through the air with a redshirt freshman qb who is actually one of the better qb's in the country and the best in the sunbelt.

Jernigan is their key. He's a threat every time he touches the ball. Their speed will be a problem for us.

Some rambling thoughts. Other than the deal about the student busses, there hasn't been anything about this game on this board in 3 days.  I'm expecting a very small crowd outside of the students/ band.  Shauss mentioned in one of the early video pieces that 1100-1200 Ohio fans attended each of the last 2 bowls.  Why would anything think that is an acceptable following?  I'll be there, but I don't see many others being there.   A lot was made about the importance of the 15 extra practices for  a bowl.  Well if you play on Dec 18 and find out you're going on Dec 5 and get the players back on the 6th and you have a travel day, you can't have 15 practice days.   Fans not get much advance notice either.  I would have preferred a January bowl-Mobile- for those two reasons, but this is better than Boise for sure.

I just want to thank Ted and everyone else here for posting all the game info all season.

I have a Saturday night work "party" that I can not miss and I just noticed today that the game time was listed on Ohiobobcats.com as 8:00 CST.  Intriqued by the previously unnoted posibility that I could be home for the second half, I went to the NO Bowl website to confirm the start time as CST AND 8:00 CST, at that.  (Sorry for my lack of confidence in THE official OHIO website).

So, I'm reporting back here to say: Just try to find the game time on the "Official R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl" website.  There is a lot of stuff there but unless I am completely oblivious, the actual kickoff time doesn't seem to be a part of any of it.

Now, unless you guys tell me otherwise, I will be highstepping it home by 10:30 Saturday with full expectations of seeing the Cats' protect a sizable halftime lead.

That is probably how many tickets were sold through the Ohio Ticket office not really the total amount of Ohio fans at the game but still more tickets need to be solid to become a serious player in the bowl picture. This game is one of Ohio's few chances to show that it can take 5,000-10,000 to a bigger bowl game. Realistically the program needs to be able to sell 20,000 for a BCS bowl if that opportunity came about.

I'm pretty sure you're right about that.  I didn't remember the exact language, but the bowls probably look at how many official tickets sold thru the team I imagine.  I know tickets sold thru the ticket office to away games are pretty terrible in most cases.  However, I can't imagine they would not be pretty good to this game so why do people buy thru other sources (can it just be money?)?  Don't they want to help the program by buying thru the ticket office?

Local area alumni. Walk ups. I wouldn't say much more than 1200 at those games maybe 2,000 total. I was in the Ohio section for the last one and it looked pretty full until I viewed it from the other side of the stadium. At least twice as many were at Detroit for last year's pizza bowl than Providence for the Georgetown win.

Compared to all the "chatter" on this site before the Mobile trip, I would have to say the "lack" of chatter since the announcement of our going to New Orleans does not bode well for the attendance figures. That said, I'll be there with 5 others in tow. Go Bobcats!!!

Maybe there was more chatter about Mobile because it was our first bowl in so many years.  Hopefully, the lack of extensive chatter on this board for New Orleans does not mean there is a lack of interest in attending the game.

From the Gold Sheet

Troy 35 - Ohio 27—This is a clear case of a matchup of one team with a superior offense (Troy) against another with the superior defense (Ohio).  The level of play in the Sun Belt and MAC is comparable, as indicated by the Trojans and Bobcats owning identical average Opponents’ Power Ratings of 20.5. There was a sharp early move on Troy at the sportsbooks, taking the line from Ohio -2 to the Trojans -1½, probably based on solid ground.

Troy has a key edge at QB with RS frosh Corey Robinson, who threw for 3339 yards and 24 TDs.  When Robinson doesn’t make mistakes (15 ints.), he can be deadly.  Robinson completed 28 of 38 with 3 TDP and no interceptions at Oklahoma State this season, but also made some bad decisions against bad teams, as he did in lackluster 3-interception game vs. La.-Lafayette.  The Trojan QB finished on a high note, throwing for 628 yards with 5 scores and only 1 int. as Troy closed the season with a pair of wins to get a share of the Sun Belt title and earn its third trip to the New Orleans Bowl in 5 years.

The Trojans own the most dangerous offensive player on the field in Jerrel Jernigan, who is 8th in the country in all-purpose yards and has scored by rushing, receiving, punt return, kickoff return, and has thrown a TD pass this season.  Troy has other capable receivers in TeBiarus Gill (48 catches), Jason Bruce (43) & Chip Reeves (26 with 5 for TDs), and a serviceable running game, with 3 RBs combining for 1424 yards and 15 TDs.

The knock on Troy is its defense, which ranked 80th against the run and gave up 4.5 ypc.  However, those stats were skewed a bit by games against explosive Oklahoma State and South Carolina.  The Trojans didn’t fare too well against the pass, either, yielding 248 ypg.  Troy does have playmakers on the defensive side, however, as bookend sr. DEs Jonathan Massaquoi (11 sacks) and Mario Addison (9 sacks, 14 TFLs) are formidable.

Frank Solich’s Bobcats have to run the ball and play keepaway to win this one. His offense ranked 105th in passing this season, as QB Boo Jackson threw for just 1688 yards and tossed more interceptions than TDs.  The Bobcat rushing attack ground out 4.4 ypc by using a host of runners, including Jackson (7 rush TDs) and backup QB Phil Bates (508 YR) to augment the production of leading rusher RB Vince Davidson (513 YR, 6 rush TDS).  Solich’s defense was just average against the pass (61st) and didn’t force turnovers the way Solich might’ve wished.  An additional problem is the questionable eligibility of 5th-year sr. DE Ernie Hodge, whose academic standing is in doubt.

The bottom line is that Ohio is likely going to have to play from behind, and the Bobcats just don’t have explosive offensive threats.  Conversely, Robinson and Jernigan give the Trojans the ability to get ahead and stay ahead, or rally if needed.

Here's my preview:

http://buffaloblitz.blogspot.com/2010/12/rl-carriers-new-...

I have Ohio winning 35-31.

I think the difference will come down to our defense being vastly better than Troy's defense. Troy allows a lot more points per game than we do. And while our offense doesn't compare to theirs, we score just enough points per game to win and be successful.
