Front page of Friday's sports section. And not a negative article.

Out of curiousity why does the Dispatch take so much flak but the Columbus TV networks get a free pass regarding their lack of coverage, features, stories or blurbs?

They don't get a pass from me. The Gary Trent years were the last I remember Columbus TV stations making the trip to Athens (Maybe they were there covering the Pitt game in football), and even that wasn't often. But to answer your question, it's easier to post a link to newspaper print than video links for TV news. Easier to compare.

Central Ohio TV stations (radio stations as well) receive no pass from me either. Biggest joke among all TV and radio personalities is veteran Ch. 10 sports reporter Dom Tiberi. He's an "expert" on all things o$u but if it is sports related and takes place outside the I-270 outerbelt (Otterbein being the possible exception) the guy is completely clueless. The dean of central Ohio sports reporters has been known for butchering the pronunciation of several non-big 11 colleges, two examples being Creighton ("Kree - ton") and Dusqesne ("Doo - Kess - Nee"). The Dispatch puts out an o$u Extra each fall Saturday and it includes a panel making predictions each weekend. Dom has picked an O$u to win every game over the past 4 years, including games v. USC, Texas, and a couple of others where the buckeyes were not favored to win. I truly believe he would pick an o$u over the 1985 Chicago Bears if they were to meet. And by at least 2 touchdowns.

The Bobcats received exceptional coverage one winter during the Randy Ayers meltdown at OSU and the run of the 14th ranked Bobcats.  The complaint calls to local TV, radio and Sunday Dispatch editorials were beyond reasonable.  In fact it was said that Channel 6 sports anchor Ronnie Duncan lost his job due to extensive Bobcat coverage during the 94-95 season.  Since then; all we can hope for is an article like today with at least one jab at the negative.

Athens makes up part of the Columbus media market and accounts for the numbers they claim to sponsors and advertisers.  Several of the stations have lobbied heavily to maintain a share of the SEO numbers.  Personally, I don't think many consider Ohio a threat to OSU other than the Ohio U. - OU reference.  Bob Hunter of the Dispatch has been called out numerous times for reporting OU, Ohio U. instead of Ohio.  Yet, as a Bobcat alum he continues to follow suit.  I understand why they do it.  I have 40-60 year old adults running through my neighborhood with a buckeye flag before, during and after every big game.  Regardless if one of our top tier programs return to national rankings I can't see any of them wanting to be the next Ronnie Duncan.

The reason I ask, is we see many post and threads targeted at the Dispatch, but none saying Channel 4,6,10, etc...  We had a two week + rant from one about the Dogpatch but only them.  Just curious.

My explanation is that the local TV & radio in Columbus make no attempt at serious sports coverage.  The TV broadcasts give 10 minutes to ads, 10 to weather, 6 or 7 to local news and 3 minutes to sports.  Even the OSU stuff is trite and focused on the latest interview with the most colorful senior of the week.

I'm frankly happy that OU isn't caught up in that.

IMO, Ohio has gotten a fairer shake from the Dispatch than the TV stations.

Its because Athens is so small compared to Columbus. Most people outside of Athens don't care about Ohio athletics unless they went there.

While everyone loves OSU there even though many haven't even gone to the school.

It comes down to, if the majority people don't care and would rather have OSU coverage, why would you cover OU then?

I know that it sucks and I think its pathetic that news companies place more importance on that reasoning than the actual news. But it isn't going to change so there's not much we can do.

So are you satisfied yet Doc?  Or should we have our own special pull-out Bowl Section?

Only good thing I can think of today is that the football game's late kickoff will prevent the results from making it into Sunday's Dispatch.

Agate type in newspapers across the Eastern half of the US tomorrow:    Ohio vs. Troy   late
