No not that “the”. THE Mount Union Purple Raiders are AGAIN playing in the Stagg Bowl for a shot at another National Championship next Friday. They knocked off 13-0 Wartburg in the semi final 34-31 in a real barnburner. THE Mount continues its dominance even after the Kehres’ regime has ended.

Someday a media organization is going to unmask the "semi-pro" nature of the Mount Union program. Div. III in name only.

All the DIII powers are operating on the same model. But you are correct. They give an AWFUL lot of academic aid. Marietta does the same in baseball.

For the record, my response was meant to be sarcastic, I suppose with a pinch of seriousness to it. But mostly I am just disappointed I didn't instead respond with "please send messages of irrelevant D3 activities directly to McKinney in the future."

Yea, I've always wondered why Jeff chooses to come to our games on Saturday in the fall instead of traveling to Marietta College or Muskingum for rip-roaring DIII tilt.

[Yes, I'm being sarcastic, too. I had a lot of fun at Wittenberg games when I was student there in my freshman year. There is a closeness with the team that you don't get at a big university, because you know most of the players because they are in classes with you. One of my roommates was on the team. You can go all four years at OHIO and never meet a football player.]

Several years ago two high school football teammates and both linebackers went their separate ways; one to Mt. and the other to Ohio Wesleyan.

During the weeks of August practice the Ohio Wesleyan freshman called his pal at Mt. During the conversation the Mt player asked his friend how it was going. The response was that they had 50 guys trying out and he wasn't certain how good they would be. The Mt guy said, "We have 50 guys trying out for linebacker; so much competition here with really good players at every position"!

And that is before the transfer downs!

This got me to wondering how Wisconsin-Whitewater has done since the departure of Lance Leipold, who had an amazing 8 year run, where he won the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl 6 times, and finished runner up once, between 2007 and 2014. The answer is that in the six years since, Wisconsin-Whitewater has made it to the Championship game once (2019), and lost. This year they were 8-3, losing in the first round of the playoffs. Last year they were 13-1, losing in the semi-finals to the ultimate champion, so they haven't fallen completely out contention; they just haven't reached the pinnacle again.

Mount Union has been like this for over 30 years, right? If a media outlet was going to do an expose, wouldn't it have already done so?

Actually, you're correct. The thread about Mount Union isn't a great fit for Bobcatattack.

Northeast Ohio media doesn't carry enough about any collegiate athletics beyond OSU. Not worth their time. Never going to dive into DIII.

NIL is legal now, so the expose on Mt. Union would be a tad tardy.

And the easy way to tie this back to BA is to exhume the corpse that is "Ohio should have hired Larry Kehres instead of Brian Knorr."
