You have to push the pace. Ohio should have gone downfield on every opportunity down two scores. Instead called running plays to eat up the clock and finally failed on the FG attempt. For that last down before the FG when it was obvious progress had stopped right at that moment I would have gone for a QB draw to try and pick 5 more yards for FG range. But instead of playing for a FG when that was the best opportunity at that moment they went downfield. Opportunity wasted on that drive and I doubt it would have changed the outcome but there has to be earlier urgency to get quick points.

The missed FG drive.

1st and 10 - Bangura run no gain
2nd and 10 - CJ Harris run 2 yd gain
3rd and 8 - PASS to Jones 21 yd gain

Then two Harris incompletions. 3rd and 10, Bangura up the middle loss of one.

The 3rd quarter felt like every play was Bangura up the middle no gain.

He ended with 20 carries 56 yards, 2.8 ypc.

I would have gone down field with all those plays to save time on the clock. Then within FG range on 3rd down run a QB draw out of bounds. This could have both given Bobcats another 5-10 yards for the FG but also saved 3 minutes on the clock to allow time for an extra possession at the end.

That first series in the second half was a complete disaster after winning the coin flip. More shots were needed down field and accept some 3 and outs for occasional success. CJ had that INT in the second quarter but I would put that on the coverage slowing the receiver down.

3 and out to start the half hurt.

So what you're saying is we've reverted to...

Obviously, they had no confidence in CJ going down field deep

If you hadn't noticed we've been doing a lot of BUTM the whole year. Toledo stopped it better than any other MAC team we've played. People didn't complain when BUTM was going for six, seven, ten and fifteen yards. It's only when it fails, as it did spectacularly against the Rockets, that we see complaints about unimaginative play calling.

…or CJ chose not to make the throw. I am not going to put this on conservative play-calling on CJ. It’s a Run/Pass Option. The QB has a choice. Same with passing. There are multiple receivers in the pattern. I just don’t think CJ had the confidence/experience to attempt the downfield throw.

I see several people complaining that we took to the air with several minutes left in the half and that led to a Toledo field goal. Other's are complaining that the coaches had no confidence in Harris and we should have thrown more. Obviously, we were going to keep the ball on the ground a little more with Harris just line we successfully did against Bowling Green. It seems to me that the staff knew what they were doing. I have no complaints. I think people were coming into this game and saw Ohio on a 7 game streak and Toledo on a 2 game losing streak and were underestimating how much losing the MAC MVP has on a game like this. Bowling Green had gotten lucky all year and was nowhere near as good as their record indicated. Toledo had run into adversity at the end of the year and in they were even partially recovered from it should have been considered a much better team than Bowling Green.

Exactly what I was thinking at the game - and several around me saying it before me...
