Much of it wasn't even preparation.  It was just doing the same plays over and over and over.  They realized by the second quarter that we were going to try running it up the middle and that we were just going to do zone defense without really changing it up.  Most of the time they just passed right up the middle to the empty spot.  How the coaches didn't spot this is beyond me, because we sure were noticing it.  The players did their jobs, ok, they did the plays they were told to do and did the best they could do.  The coaches are the failures here.

I don't really want to hear how much faster they were than us.  Speed is a component of winning, but you can beat faster teams by being able to run the ball well.  Not these zone blocking schemes, outside runs (though options give you... options), etc.

It is done by putting a hat on a hat with a big, strong and most importantly AGGRESSIVE offensive line with a lead blocking fullback, maybe a pulling guard for good measure.  Running downhill right into the heart of the defense.  I doubt Wisconsin gives a d*&^ (or two d*&^s for that matter) how fast you are, they are going to take the football, run it down your throat then reach down and rip it out so they can run it at you again.

Our line wasn't aggressive, our backs didn't have a lead blocker.  A power running game wears down a faster team; you can beat speed.

I am not going to disagree with you, but I am going to ask how many of these offensive schemes even exist in College football anymore?  We have made a commitment to the pistole spread attack, and that type of running game is not in that package.  The focus of the game is changing, like it or not, now the Fullback will come back in style at some point.

I was at the OSU game and one of my comments to my wife was "they actually run out of the power I formation with a blocking fullback".  Absolutely no reason why you cannot use that once in a while.  tosu did NOT do it all the time but they sprinkled it in...

Some good thoughts (which frequently are the ones I agree with) and other thoughts that are kind of silly (those are the ones I don't agree with).

One of Stunter's comments involved a question about aspiring to be a program like Troy. To that, I would reply, "Heck yes!" Living in central Florida for about 30 years, I had a chance to see Troy State University as a D-II team when they played similarly D-II University of Central Florida -- including once before a crowd about 8,000 fans BIGGER than Pedan can handle (at the D-II level, they were one classy act, with players either a step slow, pound light or inch short of "the big time" but great athletes nevertheless).  My point is that football excellence is in the history of Troy University. They are no "Johnny Come Lately" to success.

Don't know if anyone else has commented about this, but in the grid concerning recruiting, Troy hasn't recruited a TE in five years.  That ought to be a clue about the dynamics of their system (I'd have to rewatch Saturday's game to look at their sets, but I don't feel like getting sick all over again).

To the comments about needing a FB: A number of us have been whining about that for a couple of years. When Mitch Morsillo went down and some recruiting commitments didn't pan out, the opportunity for the kind of offensive scheme many of us relics believe is still relevant was gone.  I've attempted household repairs with the wrong tools for years and generally screwed things up. And so it goes with football teams. Gotta have the right tools.

To the comments about lack of preparation or focus, I just don't think those are fair insights -- in fact, pretty scaithingly suggestive that the players and coaches don't have a lot of character. If anybody seriously feels that way, they probably ought to think seriously about finding something else to do with their life rather than to follow OUr team.

Now let's all go cry in our beer or wine or whatever we use to drown OUr sorrows ... and hope that we can score more speed, a road grader and some wise decisions concerning who takes the snaps in 2011.
