Since this is THE most important position in football why can't we find 1 or 2 that can throw well.
I think Boo ended the year with more INT's then TD's, and we think he's good?
Phil is not the QB we all hoped, he can't pass, and I might add that we knew that about him, so there was no improvement. It is apparent that that Frank sees something in Phil that I don't. If someone else sees what Frank sees please comment.
We have real challenges in this position for next year.
I don't know much about the redshirt freshman, but I have my doubts that he was any better the Boo, cause if he was he should have been starting. So how optimistic can one be for next year.
And another thing....anyone notice that each year we have gone to a bowl game we have lost not only the bowl game but the the game before.
I know we lost our best offensive & defensive player this year, but I'm just talking about the QB position that needs to be upgraded.
Why can't we find a QB like Troy found, or Central Michigan found 5 years ago. These guys are out there so what is the problem?

Or the freshman QB Miami has that sliced and diced Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship game.  Who knows, maybe we do have that young QB who will be ready to play next year.  I agree, we need a young stud QB.  That being said, those kind of players just don't grow on trees I guess.

Two words: Gary Nova

He is a stud Q.B. from out here in northern  N.J.
His was going to Pitt.,but changed his mind when they fired their coach.

Actually, northern N.J. was a fertile ground for Q.B.'s this year.
So much so the coaches broke their own rules to give a bunch of
them "first team" honors.

With Rutgers' program no longer the rising star it once was,and people screaming
for the coache's head, maybe O.U. should look East a bit more.

I have faithfully watched each game for the last 20 years in Peden Stadium.  I have seen a ton of really good QBs come through.  Not a single one was a Bobcat.  This is really frustrating and, frankly, I do not understand why.  Almost every school in the MAC has had at least one stud QB during the past two decades, except us.  I understand the reason when we ran the option, but what about the other 15 or so years?

I've heard that the UND transfer (Roback) and the redshirt freshman (Snyder) are very good. Just what I've heard. Hope it's true. It's about time! We have really not had a stud QB since Cleve.

Ask me in a couple years how good Snyder, Tettleton, and Robak are. The problem, I think, is not the recruiting of QB's the last year or two, but 2005-2009, which then forced Ohio to rely on JUCO's and transfers like Bower, T3, Boo and Bates.

If we recruit a markedly better qb--or if there's one already on the roster--may I suggest that we actually play him?!

Just a crazy thought.

Add Tyler Tettleton to the mix.

I'm confident that one of these 3 will step it up next year if we need them.....and after watching the bowl game it looks like we could.

Q.) Who in the MAC has been successful the past 5 years?
A.) CMU, NIU, teams with good quarterbacks.

Now it looks like Fiami might have a half decent QB to throw into the mix. These teams were not afraid to start a freshman QB who would grow into the program. They did not bring in Juco QB's that had to rush to learn  a completely new offensive scheme. The QB is usually the "leader" who steps up and rallies the team. From the sideline antics I've seen from Bates (arguing with Frank and coaches) he is not what I would call a leader.

I'm hoping one of the current RS QB's will be able to "bring it" and turn into a true leader for this team. We really are due to have a great season. No seriously .

I still have faith in Frank!

I think Miami's QB who made Northern Illinois look silly was their 2nd or 3rd string QB; Miami didn't start him until their starter Zach Dysert went down. Had Dysert been healthy, that kid would still be sitting on the bench.

85,
That is true about Dysert.  It is also true about LeFever.  He was a freshman and came into play in his first game when the CMU starter went down in the game against Boston College.

My thoughts being that it seems as if it is difficult to put faith in a freshman QB.  It must not be easy to tell that they will step up and be successful otherwise the coach would have started them.

I would rather go 0-12 with someone who can throw a pass past the line of scrimage than to have to watch another game with Phil Bates at QB. No disrespect to him as a person or athlete but he is not a QB.  Solich is fixated on Nebraska football 12 years ago. Hell, bring back Cleve Bryant he could get more yards then Phil Bates. When you score very possession I would rush 11 defensive players because OU doesn't adjust. Boo had success rolling out early in the year where he was a threat to run or pass, bootlegs, screens, all look non existant in our Bates offense which truly is offensive.

I agree whole heartedly. We need a 3-4 year starter at QB to get us to the next level. Miami, Toledo, Troy, NIU, all have won with good QBs and are all teams we should be able to recruit against. With our weak OOC schedule the next few years we can win 7-9 games regardless of who's behind center, but if we get a good QB we'll start winning MACCs and bowls. I'd say Temple is in the same boat as us.

Getting a long term, throwing QB should be our #1 priority.

Just a crazy thought.

I haven't seen the Ohio QB's so I have no knowledge how good they are. Basied on the way that the coaching staff handled them, I think that I can make the following guesses:
1. Obviously none of them are as good today as Boo, which is why they weren't playing. That does not mean that they won't be better 4 years from now than Boo is today.
2. Obviously Snyder and Tettleton both have some skills because clearly the coaching staff went to great lengths to protect their redshirts, preserving an extra year of eligibility. When players don't appear to be that good the norm is to play them here and there and just let the eligibility run out in four years.

We'll just have to wait and see how things develop in 2011. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Thye highest rated QB we've signed in the last 6 years-Brandon Jones-an all State Georgia QB.  Played some early, then disappeared.  Great guy, good team guy apparently, didn't end up helping in the QB dept.  You never know when you're recruiting QB's that's for sure. If I were the coach, I'd try to sign 2 this year just in case one of the young guys doesn't start. I'm curious to see how many we sign-that will give an idea of what the coaches are thinking about the current crop.

I have not seen what I would call an outstanding QB since Coach Solich has been here. May be one hiding somewhere on the bench but if so why hasn't he played?

I am a Don Bosco Alumni.  And I agree about looking at Gary Nova.  Bosco has won the State Championship five years in a row, and a year or so ago, was ranked number one in the nation.  The coach, Greg Toal, is relentless.

So, the pedigree is there.

I know it's a long shot but whatever happened to the Cardale Jones possibility? Did it fall through? The only reason I bring this up is because I read somewhere today that Shane Wynn is possibly interested in visiting Toledo and Akron as well as the big time schools (PSU, the U, ect.). I remember them pledging to be a "package deal" earlier in the summer and I remember reading on here that Cardale had visited Ohio. Since they're still shopping for schools does anyone know if we are still pursuing them as prospects or are our hopes just dead in the water?

The above-highlighted things are what irk me.  When what our offense was doing wasn't working, we didn't have any answers.  If even the casual fan could see what we failed to try, it doesn't inspire confidence in the coaching behind our offense.

You guys are really overlooking the fact that the offensive line has to show up for ANY QB to have success.  The Troy QB appeared to get touched perhaps once the whole game and thus it was like throwing darts at the Harbor Inn for him. He didn't look particularly good at the two or three long throws but 10-15 yard tosses and big runs and he looks super. Kent two years in a row and Troy defenders were about ready to take the pistol snap they were in so quickly, Roman Gabrielle couldn't have withstood that onslaught.  Instead, Bates on the last play before the half learns his left tackle acted as a matador in letting Bates get cold cocked.

Lots of Scott and Boo's success came because they zigged or zagged luckily and avoided a rush and completed BIG passes.  The last two games you didn't see that.

I don't know if Bates is a passer.  For all you critics, is one pass in the NO Bowl enough to make a judgement?  Why didn't the coaches do what we have heard by announcers when a backup is forced into a game to give  the guy an opportunity to complete some easier passes and gain confidence?  The bomb he threw was way off, however he was about to get smacked even on that play.

My vote is for improving the offensive line.  If you cannot run the ball at all, I doubt you will be able to pass the ball at all either.  My vote is to improve the OL and all our QB's and running backs and coaches will look much better.

He was part of a combo package from the same High School as Thad Turner. Interestingly it was Thad Turner that signed a NFL free agent contract after graduation and not Brandon Jones.

According to an article in yesterday's paper, one of the things that Gary Nova
is looking for is a "stable" coaching situation.
Seems like O.U. would meet that concern.
Also, out here in N.J. a lot of people talk about the MAC being a "quaterback confernece".
Hey,its worth a shot.
