I just read that Penn State denied a request by a player to transfer out of Penn State to another school.

Someone remind me about this.  So, the kid can't leave and enroll somewhere else and play football unless Penn State agrees to let him do so?

It haPpens occasionally, essentially it is denying the coaches or representatives of a school to speak with an athlete. If the athlete chooses to still leave they must be a full-time student for one calendar year (standard in football and basketball, but not other sports). The catch here is the SA is not allowed to receive athletic aid for the one calendar year. NOTE: the Big10 does not allow scholarships to inter conference transfers in any sport, and those athletes must pay their own way.

Word in State College area is that Paterno did not say no, but said go through spring practice and if you still want out you got it.  Policy regarding denying transfer is outlined above.  What is not presented is the negative impact it has on future recruiting.  Obviously would make a future recruit hesitate if he thought the decision was "for ever more."  If Bolden can win back job in Spring he stays.  If not, he moves on.

On the one hand, these kids have to know they are competing for jobs and when they bolt due to not being able to beat someone out, it drives me nuts.  

On the other hand, QB is a much different position.  All other positions go several deep per game and lots of dudes get playing time.  Not QB.

Also, I hope this young man isn't dumb enough to trust a coach telling him he won a starting job in Spring.  Because that will just be B.S.  Even if its from Joe Paterno's mouth.  He can only win the starting job in August.

Agree, and it can be lost in October as he witnessed.  I think Paterno is saying Spring for both selfish and beneficial reasons.  Allows him to see if this kid Jones is the real deal (red shirted this year), allows Bolden to see that the walk-on is not going to hold the job.  But enough about PSU - no need to concern with them until 2012.

I am a lifelong Penn State fan and JoePa has been down this road before. Jeff Hostettler, Steve Joachim and most recently Pat Devlin all transferred out and had success. When Paterno released Devlin he faced the same senario, two QB's on scholarship. Bolden would be better served to have a father who kept his trap shut versus going through the media to voice his opinions, concerns and intentions.

Yeah, you're probably right.  Didn't the NCAA say it was OK for fathers to do that as long as the son is too dumb to figure it out and/or to know it's wrong?

Also, I believe if Penn State didn't provide proper guidance to the young man, he can transfer here and play in Ohio's next bowl game but not during the regular season . . . or something like that.  You know it gets real confusing sometimes trying to follow NCAA rules and comply with the letter of their law.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about this kind of transfer. If there is a good reason for the transfer, such as a bone fide personality conflict with coaches, that is one thing, but what about the prima donna that wants to transfer if he isn't starting? That kind of player often brings a lot of extra baggage. Would he cause trouble if he doesn't always start at Ohio? Would he pout and threaten to walk off the team? What does that do to team morale? I will take a team unifier, and motivator any day.

Devlin transfered to Delaware and is leading the Hens in the FCS National Championship game tomorrow night.  Guess where Bolden wants to transfer?  Yup, Delaware.

How I feel depends on how they handle themselves during the process, not based on the position. A kid that quietly requests a transfer, and makes a move I have no problem with. One that calls press conferences I think brings a lot of baggage.
