This guy giving money and, especially, UCONN taking his money does not give him the right for a seat at the table.  Should they have made the token call to him to gain his thoughts?  Yes.  Should they make decisions based on what he wants.  Of course not.

Reminds me in a magnified way of those on this board who demand we play certain teams and fire certain coaches because we're fans and we know what is "right" for the program more than the AD and coaches do.  Let's walkout to make our point.  Indeed.

Connecticut's governor called this guy up to kiss his ass?  Unreal.

Do you not think T. Boone Pickens doesn't call the shots at Oklahoma State, the big money fired Rich Rod! The Wolfe family fired Earl Bruce. I do not care the level, when you get into peoples pocket you give them a voice for the right price.

Don't equate a guy giving $3 million to T Bone or Knight.  You get  the ear, you do not get the voice, and certainly not the single voice.  It is not like Bruce was wanted by the masses and run out of town by a single family. Rich Rod was not wanted by the masses, but run out by the money - even the low donors did not buy into him.  They get your ear, you can give them a voice.  They do not get to decide.

If I give anything over $10k, I expect to coach at least one game.

Much more to the Earl Bruce story than is publicly out there. Many people over value their worth, and some that give money want a say in the proceedings, wether they get said say is another matter or to what level, but they still want it.

Of course you know more about Bruce than anyone else on this board .  Agree they want say.  But they do not get said say.  (unless you completely buy the program ala Boone or Phil - they you do get what you pay for - and so does the University.  But OSU, Mich and certainly UCONN are not at that level.

I think the larger donors should be consulted to a certain extent.  Let's take Ohio for example.  Bob Walter has a lot of money for a reason.  He is a gifted businessman who has done very well building a successful business.  If I were McDavis or Schaus, I would want to tap into his leadership abilities and organizational vision.  Hiring one of the most important folks (football or basketball coach), is a very important decision.  College athletics is a business.  I am not sure about the UConn case because the article is written in a way that make the donor look like a lunatic.  I think in our situation, there are a few folks outside the university that should be consulted for a hire like the head football coach.  It is not because of the dollars they give, but because they are smart people who know about leadership.

I think the general tone of the letter written does a suffiient job of making the writer look like a lunatic.

I've had psychotic girlfriends dump me with less self-important drama.

How a businessman can ask for his donated money back is the biggest question I have about this guy.   If there was some kind of contract mentioning that possibility, maybe, but that's very unlikely.  The guy is delusional if he thinks he can get that money back.  I don't deny that he has some standing to ask to be included in the coach selection process, but once denied or disregarded, back off you jack....    He certainly has a right to go elsewhere in the future with his money.   I have  a feeling that the animosity didn't just happen overnight, but maybe the guy just snapped.  Good thing he wasn't armed.  This rant in print will go down as a classic one.

Not sure about knowing him better than anyone on this board, but I guarantee I know him better than 99% of people on this board.  I first met Coach Bruce when he was an assistant at Ohio State, and then later when Coach Licthenberg was the Head Coach here, Earl used to come down every few months for dinner with Tom and Sue Anne, I was fortunate to be a guest on multiple occassions.  I have since crossed paths with Coach Bruce many times in the past 10 years.  But hey, I'm known on here for not knowing anything.  :)

Now I know why they picked me to be on the last AD search committee.
