JCW,
Thanks for your kind words, but you look at things differently when you have athletes in both programs and saw first hand how things were run. Thank goodness, we never had to face the decision to go to another university and pay full price because the scholarships were already taken. The swimmers were told repeatedly that their program was safe so decided not to transfer when they had the chance. OR finish their degree at OHIO and never swim. MY son would never have been a MAC champion.  He was lucky, but his younger teammates were not.

I didn't mean to imply that Title IX is a joke... What is a joke is that there are several ways a school/program can be in violation.  All you have to do is use one part of it that works for you.  Sadly, it was never intended then, nor now, to cut men's programs, but it has.

OA, I fully understand, you had one son getting a meal when he got on the bus, eating all the steak he could get down, with desserts, and an hour later a $10 snack the night before a game, breakfast in the morning and as soon as the game was over a large sub or large pizza for one person.  While your other son got on a bus with a box of granola, a bunch of bananas and hoped his $5 travel money would be enough to buy the value meal he wanted.  Your oldest son competed for the love of competing and Ohio University, however his experience was never what it should have been and was not what it was at other DI institutions.

Swing and a miss on Gruden....

Best line of the article:

"Hocutt was in his Miami office Thursday, and a hiring of a new coach was not imminent. Hocutt has not responded to requests for comment, and said he would not discuss the search process until Miami's next coach is named."

Just like I said before...locked in his office trying to beat Freecell.

What a putz.

Brutally critical dissection of Hocutt's handling of the UMiami coach job:

www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/14387018/ad-hocutt-cutting-up-miamis-chances-at-quality-coaches

Can't recall seeing too many ADs raked over the coals in print this way.

Trust me, if you are using Gregg Doyel as your point of intelligence, you have a long ways to go.  He spent many a nights in Charlotte.  We’ve crossed paths (more than once) and let's just say I was WAY less than impressed.  I will give him this.  He always admits he has an agenda.  I can also promise you he can not name more than 5 ADs in the country.  I've seen him have difficulty naming coaches.

Not sure what "using him as my point of intelligence" means in this context. I'd never heard of Doyel before yesterday, but it's a relevant link.

Are better writers heaping praise on Hocutt?

Back to the topic at hand, why *do* ADs outsource important hires to headhunters? Is it a CYA move? Couldn't an engaged, competent AD with a football pedigree rattle off ten or twelve legitimate candidates off the top of his head and form an in-house search team without much difficulty?

Didn't mean it personally, only that he is an A@@ of the first degree.  He tends to want gas and fires and is willing to create the fire if that is what it takes to create a story.

CYA is a reason to use a search firm but not for the reason you may think.  With headhunters, just like with (pro) athletes and their agents the parties to the immediate negotiations or the initial feeling out process can stay respectfully distant and unaffected while the hard stuff gets done.  Then everybody else can meet and shake hands when its over.  The agents go away and personal relationships are preserved for the people left to work together.
In this scenario, Jon Gruden and Kirby don't have to have a face to face. It all happens behind the scenes  Then when Gruden says he isn't interested, it's no reflection on Hocutt's talents of persuasion or the institution.

(OOPS).

Adding to Bobcatob's post, if I was a public university, I'd use one to avoid public record disclosures as well.

Not that it matters, but if Dan Mullen gets the job (and he probably should have been the first choice all along) then the "first lady" of Miami U football will be a Bobcat.

Just a joke.(cutt)

Hey, the Department of Labor says that the average American has 11 different employers between the ages of 18 and 40.  Kirby is just making sure he gets his 11 employers in.

Then they need to tell Kansas the same thing because they were after him big recently - but I guess they are a joke also.  Happen to be in Miami on business this weekend - they tried to buy him into staying, very disappointed he is leaving.  Guy is incredibly respected by major players.

Check your facts and your sources. I know people close to the Kansas search situation (believe it)...Bubba Cunningham at Tulsa was choice #1 all the way through. To the point the contract was finalized until the Chancellor intervened with some language changes to kill the deal. Hocutt was never on the list.

Just b/c you went to Miami (i.e. stayed at a Holiday Inn Express) doesn't put you close to this situation.

Further, it speaks volumes that Hocutt wasn't on the Kansas list. True lack of respect for his ability, which I second. He grew up 45 mins from Lawrence and attended Kansas State - if ever there was a slam dunk candidate it would have been him - but NOPE.

My connections are at Miami.  Believe me Kansas asked to talk.  Honeycutt and Miami said no.  Perhaps because he knew he was not their first choice.  If so, smart move on his part.  Man is doing well for himself

As with most everything Joker-Cut does, this move raises more questions than it supplies answers.  I have virtually no respect for the man.  I'm glad he's not our problem anymore.

I had dinner with him twice in Houston and decided after the second there would not be a third.  Always seem to have a mocking tone when discussing OU sports/ fans  and acted like the school and market was just too small time for him. The next year he moved on.  So now Lubbock and TTU... close to family but kinda considered the ugly step sister of the conference.

And Joke-Cutt strikes again by canning Pat Knight....

Easiest decision ever. Now he can set TTU hoops further back by actually having to make a decision.

This guy is a clown from the word go.

I'd be willing to bet that the firing of Pat Knight was above Kirby's pay grade and was probably the first job given to him by the money behind the scenes.

Try reading the PR. The President at Tech fired him.  You sure obsess about people from OUr past.

Texas Tech fired basketball coach Pat Knight today after the Red Raiders finished 13-18 and 5-11 in the Big 12.

“I felt like it was time to make a change within our men’s basketball program,” Tech President Guy Bailey said in a university statement. “I appreciate everything Pat has done for our university, not only as a head coach, but also throughout his career as an assistant. I wish him success and the best moving forward."
