On twitter, Caleb Troop linked an article in the Miami Herald where we get a mention relating to Sun Belt Conference expansion. In reading it, we are not so much listed as a possibility, rather the southern most MAC school. My question is, why would the Sun Belt want to add just an 11th football member? Why not 12 that would bring them a conference championship? Anyone think we inquired?

I'd eat my hat if we even inquired.  At best, it would be a lateral move.  And it would dramatically increase travel costs.  ZERO chance the Sun Belt takes on a current MAC member.

It's gonna be a current WAC school, IMO.

I think it will be Temple Jeff. They don't think they are in the MAC anyway according to certain fans of theirs.

Ditto.  Could never figure LaTex in the WAC; the closest school is 900+ miles away.  With travel costs the way they are, moving back to the Belt would make a whole lot of sense.  I think OU was mentioned in the article only to show that it won't be a MAC team.

Louisiana Tech.
This.  Shocks me any other school even was thought of, especially our fair institution.

Read the article again. It doesn't mention us as a candidate, only a logistical milepost.

This is a non-story.

The Sun Belt is on its way to being a better conference than the MAC in football, if its not there already.  And, basketball likely won't be far behind.  The MAC is no longer a serious division I conference.  It is just a hangers-on type conference.  Until MAC school are ready to approach $20 million in athletic spending (which is very low by the way) the death spiral to the bottom will continue.

Hmmm...MAC could be stronger, no doubt.  But death spiral?  Well, I guess when MAC wins over Illinois, Michigan State, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Pitt, Northwestern, Colorado, Colorado State, Navy, Minnesota, Syracuse, Kentucky, etc stop coming, then perhaps death spiral will be an appropriate choice of terms.

As to football only, I wouldn't mind seeing the best of the MAC and Sun Belt form the core of a new conference.

Football:  The MAC's Sagarin numbers have been better most seasons.  However, there seems to be a trend toward the Sun Belt outperforming the MAC in bowls.

Basketball:  I don't agree with you there.  While the MAC has been down the last several seasons, the Sun Belt has been even more down.  In fact, I've used them as an illustration of a conference that is following the same basic strategy as the MAC and suffering the consequences...
