There has been discussion on here in the past about Ohio's pace of play. Especially recently with the news of the move to no-huddle. Bill Connelly, who does analysis for ESPN and FootballOutsiders.com, has a blog and one of his recent posts was about adjusted pace of play.

Since pass-heavy teams will have a faster pace of play than run-heavy teams, you have to adjust a level of expectations based on run-pass ratio. The results show Ohio with a slow pace. The Bobcats were 119th out of 120 teams in plays per game at 58.9 per game. Adjusted for run-pass mix, Ohio is still 117.

Keep in mind, this doesn't necessarily denote bad offense. There are some very good teams close to Ohio in pace. Somewhat interestingly, mythical National Champion Auburn checks in at #62. Ohio's Bowl opponent, Troy, checks in at #8.

Warning: Math involved

I don't need math to tell me we were slow. The yellow hankies for delays of game were more than enough.

Frankly, I have always felt we were slow, somewhat confused, and less than agressive on offense.   Part of that may be due to lack of a dominant playmaking QB who could throw, partly to injuries on the offensive line and partly poor or conservative playcalling.  Our offense has not been stellar in the past decade in spite of some pretty outstanding players.  Probably just not enough of them.

Interesting. One comment is that, with only 12-14 games, the foes you play could significantly alter your rank. For example, perhaps Troy would have been higher without the Ohio game, or Ohio would have been lower without Troy. They could take the analysis a step further, I suppose, and correct for that.

We were slow at the o-ffensive line of scrimmage last year?  This calls for an investigation!  And many conclusions!
