the no-contact targeting call. I don't know what it is about Buffalo, but in today's Buffalo-Georgia Southern game we get a targeting call without any contact. The Buffalo player lowered his helmet and then missed the GSU player completely.

But despite this obviously bad cal, the Bulls won 23-21.

Every MAC bowl game has been razor tight this year. A big departure to MAC bowl blowouts of years past.

Isn't it nice to know that although Tom McCabe no longer officiates college football games, his spirit lives on in the new generation of refs?

Yes, I think that that's a good way to look at it. I think the McCabe rule is that it's the intent that counts. The player lowered his helmet with an intent to commit targeting, in the view of the official, so he's guilty. The guy who tackled the Ohio QB on the four-yard line intended, in the view of the official, to tackle him in the end zone. There's a definite symmetry here.

Exactly! If you intend to kill somebody but don't succeed, you're still guilty of a crime, albeit a lesser one. This opens up a whole new class of penalties: intent to rough the QB; intent to horsecollar tackle; intent to taunt; intended illegal formation; etc.

It was a ridiculous call. What's funny is that if someone leads with the crown of their helmet but they put it on the ball and cause a fumble it's a brilliant play. Doesn't matter that it's every bit as random as a shot to the head.

LMFAO. Intent to taunt, I can see it now "I saw the look in his eyes, he was THINKING it!"

Intended illegal formation, you could call that once a drive on the Browns. Mid receiver in motion, throw the flag "He was probably not going to cover the tackle".
