Was at a BBQ last night and heard from a friend that the Ticket Office is doing a 4th of July sale for Marshall tickets. Only $10 as opposed to $30...pretty good deal, especially if you're bringing a group.

Couldn't find much information on it, other than this that was posted on the Marshall message board: http://marshall.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=2236&tid=1...

I'm sure Marshall fans are gobbling this up. My least favorite thing about playing "Stupid Cow" is the 5,000+ obnoxious fans that come with them. Sick and tired of losing to those guys, let's beat them this year!

Why are we continually discounting our product, especially this early in the season?

I received a mailer this week about season tickets (interesting because I renewed mine last month) and it had an order form for discounted Marshall tickets.  Can't remember if they were for $10 or $10 off the $30 ticket price.  Agree with BattleCat, if this year's edition of the Bobcats is picked to win the MAC East, why discount.

Agree completely! Especially, why discount for the Marshall game? Marshall fans are used to paying upwards of $30 for a ticket. If they're going to take over our stadium, at least make them pay top dollar. It's hilarious that this deal is posted all over the Marshall message board, I can't imagine that's what our ticket office had in mind with this deal.

I cringe about hearing "We are...Marshall" resonate through Peden again. We really need to beat these guys.

In the whole scheme of things, this is probably the most important game of the year.  If you want to build a fan base you've got to win your backyard rivalries/games.  Sure Miami, a MAC east title, a MAC title and a bowl win are important but if the folks between here and the Ohio River don't take you seriously no one will.

On the surface it sounds kinda silly that the one game that is supposedly a draw within the hollows is being devalued.

I guess one needs to look at the Rutland Stock Exchange ticker. If the price index of roots and mushrooms continues to fall while squirrelbellies and fatback prices continue to rise, there's going to be economical repercussions that stretch far beyond the hootin' and hollarin' range of the hollows.

I come in peace.  I love the Ohio series and am looking forward to the game.  I like Athens, and while I have been to a few basketball games at OU, I have actually never been to a football game.  I have heard the stadium is nice.  I think the Marshall fans will travel well in large part because we are starved for road drivable road games playing in CUSA.  I bought my tickets with your $10 ticket promotion.  I had mixed feelings on that.  On the one hand, why would you discount the ticket when I was set to pay $30 each gladly?  On the other hand, if you fill the stadium and pull the upset, it could be good exposure and push you on to great things in a year you are supposed to be really good.

If you like posts by opposing fans, I may drop by to chat football from time to time leading up to the game.  I hope to have a good time in Athens.  I certainly don't aim to be obnoxious.  I pull for you guys in all of your other games.  Your fans always had creative taunts in basketball.  I remember the "White wears makeup" chant at our then coach Greg White.  That was a classic.

I don't think this discount thing was a good idea. I checked out the link to the Marshall board and they've easilty bought up 100+ tickets in our 50 YARD LINE sections. And those are just the guys posting their seat locations.

No discounts was definitely the way to go for this game....at least as far as online sales go. I can live with the voucher they mailed out (it somewhat limits who can redeem it), but when you start sending emails, all bets are off. It only takes one email going to a Herd fan and the flood gates are open. Now we're stuck with their fans all over Peden for this game....ugh.

This is pure speculation, but could it be payback for us only bringing a handful of fans to Marshall last year?

I don't see a problem for it, nor did I for the UCONN $5 tix up to the week of the game.  Let's face it, Peden never sells out at full face.  So what is the problem with the Athletic Department trying to boost revenues in what is probably one of the slowest revenue months of the year?  And this promotion will be delivering twice as much revenue per seat for a game versus a non-BCS school than we did when we offered $5 tickets for a BCS school.

Regardless of whether it is full with Ohio or Marsh fans, Peden will have a far more compelling environment when the Cats bring the bell back home and the stadium is full.

Marshall fans would pay $20 a ducat, so how is pimping them for $10 a deal for OU?

We appreciate posts from fans of opposing schools that want to engage in intelligent discussions about college football, our respective schools, and avoid obnoxious trash talk.  To view what we don't appreciate, search on posts from Temple poster MH55.

Couldn't agree more, Alan.  This game is huge.  Even though Marshall is my second favorite college football team, this is one game OHIO really needs to win.  There's no doubt which shade of green I'll be bleeding this weekend.  Go OHIO!

On the other hand, there is this little issue of a nationally televised game involving another local school that might have a dampening effect on attendance.  A little bit of aggression by the ticket office seems like a good thing to me in this case,

Unless, of course, you can all promise us all your fiends will be in Peden that night regardless of who's on TV (and regardless of who their QB is).

I may be getting my hopes up way, way, way too high for this game,  but i'm hoping for a sellout crowd at Peden with this match up.

Last year, we were 45 people short of 23,000 attending the Wofford game.

This year, we have Marshall, a backyard rival, with a big local following.  I can only imagine what the athletic department will do to advertise to the students, but even then most students have at least heard Marshall (even if it was from that less than spectacular movie.)

I do have to agree though, I thought the $10 ticket sale was a bit extreme.  I could see maybe a $20 or maybe even $15, but $10 is too cheap with the kind of potential attendance.

I attended last year's Backyard Brawl against WVU at Pitt.  Don't get me wrong, Pitt's fans were in the majority, but a very large chunk (I would say about 20%) of the home side seats were filled with WVU fans.  While it was kind of annoying that some Mountaineers were trash talking in the home stands, It made the game a lot more fun because of the close proximity with the fans.  It made it seem more like a bowl game than an average home game with all the away fans isolated into one section of the stadium.

I don't think it's a bad idea to offer a deep discount this far in advance. It sort of makes up the minds of some people that they definitely are going to go to the game. If tickets are going to be $30 the whole time, then most people will wait until the last minute to buy, usually at the game. Often times, something comes up between now and then, and they change their mind.

Don't sweat how  many of us buy tickets.  I did the same thing last off season for the WVU game in Huntington.  At the end of the day, there is nothing you can do about it and it does not matter overly much.  A big crowd is a good atmosphere regardless.  Lots of away fans tend to bring out the noise in the home fans anyway.

Also, what time is the game?  I see your athletic site says 7:00 pm.  Really?  That shocked me.  Is it really on opposite the nationally televised Ohio State v. Miami game?  It seems a noon start would make for a better turnout.

It's on ESPN3 anyway.  Most people would have to be looking for our game to watch it.

What I meant by my previous post was wondering if the game is indeed at 7 pm game.  If so, do you think your crowd will be harmed by people staying home to watch the OSU v. Miami game?  Of course your die hard Ohio fans will not, but what about your fringe fans who prefer the Buckeyes?  It seems the gate would be better for a noon start.
