. . .Why Fremont was renamed, I'm not sure. I think I've seen this story before, and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Rutherford B. Hayes, who was from Fremont. I can't remember the specifics, though.
Sir, you are VERY good when it comes to history. Yes, Hayes spearheaded the move to rename the city after his good friend John Fremont, who had been the first GOP candidate to run for president. I believe that it was eventually voted on by the citizens of the city. Too bad Fremont didn't win, he would have made a much better president than Buchanan or even Hayes for that matter, but that's another story altogether.
