There really is no purpose to buying season tickets anymore. I could see 6 home games for $30, instead of paying the face value + my OBC donation.

Seriously, it's completely ridiculous that the loyal season ticket holders are the ones that are getting the financial shaft with these ticket giveaways.

Let's be honest, the only reason to buy season tickets is to ensure your place in line when all these big attraction programs come to town.

Do I really need to buy season tickets to watch Gardner Webb and Norfolk State? Pretty sure I can walk up and get myself in on the cheap if I want.

I guess I needed them for UCONN a couple years back? NOPE. Those were $5 as well.

This really is crap and I'm sick of paying an extra couple hundred dollars when the general public is getting everything at depressed prices. There's just no upside for me to keep doing it.

Love, this year there will be tickets on the cheap, and other revenues from parking, concessions etc. at full price.  At some point, soon, being at the game will catch on and Peden tickets will be at a premium and season ticket holders will be bragging about how long they have supported the team and that they did it before Peden was a place to be.  Go ahead break your streak of support as a season ticket holder just as the Bobcats are beginning some streaks; wins against, East titles, 9+ win seasons, bowl participation etc.  Really, do what is right for you financially, however, I believe in time season tickets will be the way to go and sellouts will not require ticket discounts. I don't think I ever got such an email. I wonder if someone sent Alan only an email, to keep him happy? ;)

The philosophy of selling cheap tickets to sporting events often is rooted in getting as many people in the door and figuring once they are in it will help concession sales. Schaus is familiar with how promotions are done in pro sports and i think we have to trust our judgement here with a 21,000 average for home saturday games in 2009. This will lead to greater revenues and parking. It will pump more money into the local economy via hotels and dining out.

It will be nice for it to be absolutely packed. And I don't think there will be as much of a loss in revenue as some think when you add in concessions, parking, merchandise and those kinds of things.

Excellent point UpSan!

Bucho,
Welcome aboard...Hopefully you've grown to love Athens as much as we all do.  It's refreshing to see the "hometown" sentiment in a day when it's severely lacking much too often and out of a Rival Alum no less!  Honestly the handful of Miami guys (like Devil Grad) that hop on this board occasionally are level headed and support entertaining conversations.  I for one am glad to have you!

Finally...I have to kind of side with The Love here for once.  I'm not saying I don't agree with the plan to generate long term interest while increasing revenue with things like concessions, etc but this kind of thing absolutely should be advertised up front so folks can make an educated decision regarding their season tickets.  It would not have changed my plans, but I see Love's point...

Did I read this right that you can buy a ticket to a Ohio Bobcat game for $5?

Could it that all of MAC TV games are bringing in additional revenue to cover the cheap seats and the AD wants to build long-term interest to insure large crowds for these games? Big crowds on TV builds big national reputation for the school.  Of course, winning also helps.

I wonder, has anyone actually asked the athletic department why they do these promotions?

I can tell you without the athletic department's input. Not enough people buy tickets at regular, but still reasonable prices. That's the reason for the promotions, that's the reason we'll always be in the MAC, that's the reason we'll never sniff a major bowl. People who buy tickets and travel elevate a program. We don't have them.

Hold everything...

TUV has a point.  We should alert our AD's office and point them to Temple for some mentoring in the marketing arena.  They did after all, squeeze every ounce of local support out of their major media market while narrowly missing edging perennial power New Mexico in average attendance last year (20,215 to 20,888).  Not to mention the insight they could provide in avoiding pitfalls like getting bounced from a conference for poor attendance.

For those that didn't get the email, here's the one that I got:

I've gotten a lot of these emails from the athletic department this year, and usually they're very sharp graphically. As someone who does a good deal of graphic design work, I could tell that they were well done. But it now looks like design is being outsourced to a 5 year old!

This all makes sense now, it is an Athens Day promo which happens to be on HC. These town days are a potential great promotion and does not bother me in the slightest. It also so explains why us non Athens residents did not get the e-mail.

Probably because during the school year, they're done by VISCOM student interns (and they're really good).

On SBH's behalf I'll post this - you're telling me that these emails didn't go to The Plains residents too?

Well, unless Caldwell recently got annexed to Athens, it somehow escaped the metroplex and reached my inbox!

There is value in marketing these cut rate tickets. This is an opportunity to establish a relationship, if you will, with people who have not previously gone to games, lost contact with the institution, or need an incentive to come back through the turnstyle.

Once you get them into the stadium, into your database, and onto your mailing lists, you now have the opportunity to reach out to those people to purchase tickets at regular prices, return to campus and support the campus economy, and (the biggest of all) make donations to not only the athletic department, but general University funds as well.

Ever use a coupon that required your name, address, and email? Same thing.

There is a core group, most of us included, that will be at events regardless of the financial commitment. But our numbers have to grow. These are the seeds for that.

How do I get my hands on these? My girlfriend is coming to homecoming with me this year and this would be a relief for this grad student's wallet. She has been to Athens once so far (a Jersey girl born and raised) and loved her experience. I can't wait for her to experience my favorite weekend of the year.

Never got one Mr. Swank, so they obviously did not go to my part of the State. My father, a 1971 grad did get one though and he still lives in Athens.

Hmm . . . What we have here, sir, is a "modified, limited hang out" to quote John Ehrlichman, Bob Haldeman's best friend.

Seriously? We just made plans to be in Athens for homecoming for the first time in many years. Even got a hotel room reserved. Now we're sold out of the game?  Wow.

The tickets aren't sold out, yet, it's just at those prices it will sell out.  A family of four coming to the game was looking at $120 in tickets - now they're looking at $35.

In related news, I just died. Which is not to say that I'm actually dead, but that one day I will in fact be dead.

Just received a mailer today that the Gardner-Webb game is actually "Youth Day", and children ages 3-18 can get tickets for only $5.00.  Don't know about you guys, but that pisses me off.  How dare they?!  Next thing you know they will allow us to donate our tickets that we can't use to local kids to go to the games for free.  That would REALLY suck.

Actually youth priced tickets would be a good idea everyday.  Charging full boat for a five year old just doesn't make a whole lot of sense and in some cases discourages attendance by all family members.

Agreed. I've gone to my fair share of road games, and I'd say that a youth price is pretty standard in the MAC. Many lump Youth/Seniors/Military into one discounted single game ticket price. As one who is more than qualified for the senior price, I appreciate it.
