The Ohio cheer team was in Knoxville over the weekend for a juried camp, along with 22 other cheer teams from the eastern U.S. They did us proud, including our feisty mascot: Rufus received the award for "Most Improved Mascot."

That could reflect something as simple as not losing his head. Or tackling an opponent's mascot and giving it a black (Buck)eye.

The report at OhioBobcats.com states, though, that "While the cheer team was hard at work, the Ohio University mascot, Rufus, was in class learning new moves and tricks for the 2011-2012 season! Rufus interacted and learned from several other mascots across the country. The mascots performed individual two-minute skits for the campers and on the final day performed a fifteen-minute routine for the entire camp. Camp is now a requirement for the mascots, as it is now part of the cheerleading program."

As for the cheerleaders: They collected several honors, including a first place in the Sideline Competition for the large co-ed division. Click for the full story ... and here's hoping they have plenty to cheer about this fall!
