Something that came across my mind this week. I'm curious.

Personal choice, but yes I support those who I hear advertising with my favorite teams.

I don't really fall into any poll category (and thus didn't vote).  All things equal, yeah, sure, I might think about it.  But, for example, my primary preference, say, in bookstores was always College because of their local nature vs. Follett's, even though Follett's probably had more skin in the athletics game.

Do places like Wendy's or McDonald's get a boost from ads?  It seems unlikely.  Marketing is such a black art kind of thing.

And no amount of sponsored dance team performances would've made me consider patronizing Riverpark Towers.

But, Millstone BBQ probably got stopped at a couple more times than I would've otherwise because of their support in ads and having schedule posters in their entrance.

So, kinda?

Please excuse my stream of consciousness.

I voted no. Sponorsoring athletics is another form of advertising, and so to that point, it's going to increase my likelihood to go to those businesses. But other forms of advertising probably would work just as well.

This is an interesting question. For example, I'd like to know if Citizens Bank has seen any appreciable increase in business since signing on with athletics. You can't go to a any game without hearing their name at least 10 times, it seems. As stupid as it is, "Citizens Bank First Down Bobcats" is kind of catchy. Wonder if they have gotten much out of it?

I would say "yes", as long as such a choice was not completely contradictory to rational consumer behavior.

In a word, yes. Same situation, if I have to choose between Pharmacy A and Pharmacy B, whichever one supported Ohio University I would shop at if all things were equal.

Not being an Athens area resident, I'm not particularly influenced by who sponsors Bobcat athletics.  I go to Wendy's only on rare occasions because my wife and son aren't fond of the place.  AEP and Frontier don't serve my area.  The nearest Hungry Howie's is in Newark.  And I'm not going to put my business in an Athens area bank or insurance company.  But that shouldn't cause companies to withdraw their sponsorship.  They should view sponsoring OU athletics as part of an overall advertising strategy to get their name before the public.  At any event, at least half and maybe 3/4 of the crowd is local, so you're getting your name out to lots of current and potential customers.  It helps to keep current customers and gin up additional business.

Citizen's Bank first down is sorta annoying.  However to hear it about 40 times vs. 'kron and redhawk and temples and stupd cow would not be disagreeable.

47 vs. kents.

Thank you. That is so lame. I appreciate the support, but each first down? that is so needy!

Good thought, Monroe.  But against KSU this year, I'm hoping for "no Citizen Bank first downs."  If you score a TD on every offensive play there are no first downs!

Oh, I was so busy making a weird joke that I almost forgot the question, which is a good one.  Yes, I try to do business with Ohio athletic sponsors, as others have said, "everything else being equal."

I actually suggested that to a local business for High School Football. I think if Citizen Bank did it on third downs, it would be nice

Has anyone been to a game anywhere else where the first downs are sponsored? I've been to my fair share of college football stadiums, but I've never heard it before.

It's pretty bush league to me...but like I said, I have to admit it's somewhat catchy. And since you WANT to hear it (i.e. get a first down), you kind of associate it with a positive experience. Getting way too psychological here...

How much does that cost at some universities? Think about how much it would cost for a Huntington Bank First Down for State? or a Skyline Chili Third Down Stop for UC?

Interesting question.  I guess i don't look at it as support in the strict dictionary definition of the word.  These businesses have chosen to spend their advertising dollars either for radio, tv or in-game "commercials" as opposed to just writing a check of "support."  My wife and I write a check of support each year to OU's Performing Arts Series.  Sure, we do get our names listed in the program but we're not advertising a product or business.  So the long and short of it is, my buying decisions are influenced by product quality, perceived value and customer service not on which "station" a business advertises.

I've heard similar on radio braodcasts, maybe not every 1st but often.  Also Bud Light replay, the Bass Pro Shops catch of the day, etc.  Hell, even the NFL has second half kickoff sponsored by Budweiser, don't they?

It's just a matter of time before we can each pay to have OUR name on the jersey, too.
BATES sponsored by Monroe Slavin has a nice ring to it.

The Bengals, and I think the entire NFL have the Red Zone sponsored by Heinz. They play a little thing everytime the home team gets in the red zone.

I didn't write "support."
