I am on vacation in Philadelphia this week. Traveled from King Of Prussia into city on train and what did I see but Temple. Now I had at first thought of getting off train and looking at the school then I remembered what I had always heard about the area it is located in. It is true, Temple is located right in the ghetto of Philly. Nobody would get off to see it, you might not make it back alive. A fine university to be in the mac. Thank goodness mac football and basketball games are not played on campus.
One weekend a friend of mine (who went to OHIO and just got his M.Ed from Penn) and I went to a party at Temple. We got out of the cab and immediately regretted our decision. We didn't stay long.
I'm currently interning at the City Planning Commission though and I will say there are some pretty ambitious projects planned for the area. Gentrification has been under way in all parts of the city, though North Philly has been a little slow to see development. It's coming though (though hampered some by the current economy).
P.S.- If you want a good cheesesteak skip Pat's and Geno's. I'd hit up a little known gem in West Philly called Colonial Pizza. They have HUGE cheesteaks that are so meaty and so cheesy you'll feel like you're in heaven. It's located at the corner of 43rd and Pine. Also, Koch's deli (on Locust between 43rd and 44th) has amazing deli sandwiches and gives away all kinds of free samples while you're waiting. Finally, if you are going to hit up Reading Terminal Market stop by Hershel's for the best brisket you'll ever have. No joke.
