Nice interview on ohiobobcats.com.  You can see why he was chosen as a captain.

A little undersized.......no question about his heart and character.....hopefully a healthy season for Captain King.

I know his role probably would have been limited last year anyway, but I'm guessing he must have had an injury also since he didn't accumulate any stats whatsoever? He only has 11 career tackles, and only four other linemen on the team have any experience at all: Jones, Huynh, Meyers and Scott. Obviously, he's going to get a chance to play a much bigger and important role this year.

Sounds like a political choice. Keller should be captain.

I will keep out of this.  The team/players know who has been there lifting, going hard in practice, who they want to thank for leaderhip.  Who the team picks shoud be captain.

Do we even know for sure that Keller isn't a captain?  I feel like there are usually about four on the squad, total.  So far I've heard of King and J. Thompson as captains.

In any case, Keller was a captain last year.  There wouldn't be any real harm in giving a different player the honor of the title this season.  Keller can still provide leadership.

We will be led by seven honorable young men this year.  You betcha, Noah Keller is a captain!  Also named captains are Joe Flading, Riley Dunlop, LaVon Brazill, Jordan Thompson, Jeff King, and Erik Benjamin.  This team is loaded with men of character.  These seven, along with many others, will be leading this team to the greatest season ever!!

While I agree that there's a lot of good leadership on the team, and I'm expecting a great season, I will have to admit that having seven captains kind of reminds me of the schools that have seven valedictorians so that no one will be offended.  Back in the day, there was usually one captain.  Then you started to occasionally see co-captains, and then tri-captains.  With the way this is going pretty soon everyone on the first-team will be a captain.  It kind of destroys the meaning to me.  GO OHIO!

A Captain is a person who has qualities that lead, if the staff feels like these seven young men have that then so be it. Some years you may only have a couple, some teams have no leadership at all. These guys are quality young people and have represented this institution well and will continue to in my opinion.

BC, LC and BJ, while I respect the opinions you express, I thoroughly disagree with them.  I don't like the concept of septa-captians.  Figure out who is MOST deserving and make him the captain.  The other guys, if they are true leaders, can learn to adjust to not having that title.  This everyone-gets-a-reward-for-being-a-nice-guy syndrome is just not the best way to run a country or a football team IMHO.  All that said, I fully expect that we will overcome this bit of nonsense and have an outstanding season this year.  14-0, baby!  Go OHIO!

7 out of 120 guys and you compare Ohio Football to Athens City Rec with the everyone gets a trophy? Maybe all 7 are most deserving? Maybe all 7 are true leaders? Novel concept i know, but believe it or not that happens when a team is fortunate enough to have multiple leaders, and kids today are different in both their dedication and in how they respond to things.

It's very common for teams to have that many captains. The days of one guy as captain are long gone, for better or worse.

One of these things is not like the other, can you tell?

"It's good to be King"

"The buck stops here"

"If you wanna be the man, you gotta beat the man"

"I'm in charge here ..." (A Haig)

"It's lonely at the top"

"All seven of us will think about this and get back to you"

"First among equals"

Seriously, 7 captains doesn't bother me but it might be enough to have an O captain, a D captain, a Spec Teams captain, even a captain's captain.  But it's nice that there are that many deserving guys.

You guys are missing the most important question...... who calls the coin flip?  Is there a series of pre-coin flips to determine who gets to call the actual coin flip?

That responsibility goes to the real captain Noah Keller.

Back in the day one captain could captain 35/40 players at practice, the odd meeting and in games. Today with the schedule they run and sessions without coaches it is great to have multiple captains to run things at the player level.  Love it when player leaders provide peer guidance and free coaches for film study, recruiting, etc. that is now endless.

The difference between teams that are good and teams that are great is often leadership at the player level. The best Bobcat teams had strong player-leaders. I think this team appears to have very good player leadership, and that reinforces my opinion that this will be a season to remember.

Having lots of good player leadership is certainly a positive.  I'm not arguing with that concept.  I just think it's plain stupid to designate seven of these team leaders as captains.  Why not create other titles for specific leadership areas?  A gentleman who sits next to me in Peden has often remarked in recent years about the proliferation of "captains" on teams in recent years.  He and I have compared it to the concept of "grade inflation." I  realize that my opinion here is in a distinct minority, but that's the beauty of our democracy -- even idiots are free to express themselves.
