Let's be honest here - the Walter family didn't come to us with the idea of the IPF donation; we begged for it.  So there's no way we're now going to say, "Due to the ongoing budget concerns..."

To be precise, it will be a MPF, or multi purpose facility.  I believe IPF is bad form internally, so we should try to adopt MPF.

They will still need to have all bases covered (upkeep, etc...) and the Walters knew this with their donation.  The Athletic department has been busy getting the rest.  Each project like this is being looked at differently than before.

Um, okay.  And Peden is the multipurpose outdoor athletics facility.  I think we all know that 60% or more of the use will be for football and Marching 110.

Bingo!  That's the way collegiate fundraising works.  The sales staff courts the potential donors and tries to match the donors' passions with the needs of the institution.  I've seen the process in action and like any other sales position, there are folks who are really good at it.

IPF vs. MPF - it it ends up being the former that's where we'll get the criticism.  Back in the late 70's and early 80's when the drinking age was lower, it would have been a great place for a big Halloween party.

Saw something on Facebook yesterday along the lines of it's a good thing Haitians don't have Internet access, because they'd all be giving us the finger right now.

We can't be sure about it until we know what the final specs of the building are going to be. A student medical center could be included as there has been a lot of talk about that as a top university need.

I agree that a health center would be an excellent fit. Lord knows Hudson needs to be replaced - it was horrifying in 1981.

They should demolish Hudson. Its too small to be functional. Expand the park improving the views on campus. When is the renovation to the old Baker Center for the communications school scheduled scheduled to be complete?

For anyone interested here's a link on the recently completed WATTS Center (Watson and Tressel Training Site) on Youngstown State's Campus.  I've driven past it several times, and have to say I am pretty impressed.  It's right next to Stambaugh Stadium, like ours would be.  With those facilities that they now have, and the recruiter Coach Wolford is, I definitely think that they could be ascending in the FCS ranks again.  I would be very pleased if the facility in Athens is comparable to this.

No indoor track......yes, that makes perfect sense. It's this lack of long term vision from the administration when I question why I should continue to make it a priority to give back to Ohio every year.

I don't have anything substantive to add to the MPF discussion, but I would like to chime in that I laughed out loud when I saw BG86's new avatar.  Great sense of humor!  Love that kind of satire.  Doesn't mean I'm not sensitive to the devastating quakes in Haiti and NO.

OCF:

Folks here in the Commonwealth "freak out" over a little bit of snow.  One inch of snow will shut down the Richmond City Schools for at least three days.  The forecast of 1/2 inch of snow three days out will create "flash mobs" of people rushing out for a loaf of bread and milk.

I have lived in Virginia since 1988 and my former business took me to large and small towns including Mineral where the quake started.  The people in the Commonwealth are wonderful, but most get confused between Ohio University and O$U.

Slated for next year (though I don't know if that is up to date -- I'd had 2013 in my head).  Pretty soon, regardless.

Personally, I'd put a track in there.  Now is the time to get as much as possible included in that thing.

So here's what I wonder.  Are they afraid they don't/won't have the money?  Or, are they anticipating a day when there will be no women's track and field team either?

LOL, had not been on campus since the Wyoming game.  For all I know, they finally rebuilt Belk's since then.

It could be that they were told they don't need an indoor track.  The running sports aren't the same if you don't have the elements.  That and half the meets are in the cold anyways.  Yes, I said half.  It's not like football where you'll get one or two in the snow.  Track season, remember, starts in early March with conditioning starting in February so people are already out running in the cold to begin with.  You don't get used to that unless you are practicing outside in the stuff.  Believe me, I ran many mile and two mile events in high school in 30 degree weather at meets.  Had I not gotten used to the cold by running in it those races would have much harder.

Might it also have something to do with the fact that there is an indoor track next door in Ping? Seems like politically it would be hard to justify the cost of adding one to this facility as well.

From a competitive standpoint, there is indoor track and there is outdoor track.  Not the same thing.  In fact, I'm not sure the NCAA recognizes indoor track, ie. the 50 or 60 meter sprint, whatever it is.
I would think that unless you were competing seriously in indoor events, the Ping track or a makeshift track inside a MPF would be adequate for most training.

I failed to realize that there was a track at the Ping Center (have not been inside) which should suffice for the track team to train at during the winter for many of the distance events and the possiblly work on speed training on a turf field at an indoor practice facility.

I am really behind the times in terms of the facilities. I guess I am still living in the days when you worked out on the Universal Weight Machine at Grover, walked up Jeff Hill instead of a treamill and then cooled down with a beer at the Baker Center Frontier Room instead of drinking the G Series.

The track inside Ping is not a traditional field track. it's only about 1/10 of a mile, has a lot of turns, and is more meant for recreational jogging than sports.
