Had a chance to see most of it.  The heat finally got to me and I made  hasty retreat towards some cold drinks.  Thought it was a decent performance....many of the starters sat out......some casual observations:

*  Beau Blankenship is a really quick back.....hard to see and to tackle... possibly an impact player for us.

*  Jamil Shaw gives us great depth at CB.....good size and he is aggressive.

*  Joe Stefanski looks like an adequate backup at MLB....always seemed to be around the ball.

*  The starting OL looks ready to go.....guys like A.J. Strum look huge.

*   Vick looks like the #2 QB......Bell and Snyder pressing today.....Snyder with some decent runs.

*  Tettleton was a good field general today....and looked like a # 1.....and I hate to say it .....but I only worry about his height.....I've even said it's no big deal....but when you see him out there it is just a tad disconcerting.

*  The injuries to  DT's Taylor and Hastings didn't look too serious....keep those fingers crossed.

*  A.J. Grady had a pick at LBer......good quicks and smarts.

*  Nate Carpenter  looks like he can get some pt at the safety position.

*  DT Crutcher definately looks the part.

Heard Keller is out until late next week.  What's the nature of his injury?

Concerned about opening in 91 degree weather in New Mexico...

Thanks Doc! That is awesome info.

Did Fulcher play at all? He wasn't mentioned by anyone who was there.

How does Hammonds look? He also has been pretty low profile so far.

He was out of last Saturday's practice with a hamstring injury, so I'm guessing it's still the same injury and they are just being extra cautious.

According to an article by someone going to OU that was linked in another thread, it's the knee and required surgery:

Also returning after a year cut short by injuries is linebacker Noah Keller, who has pro potential if he could ever stay healthy. Keller rehabbed well during the summer but just three days into camp suffered a new injury to his knee that required minor surgery. As of now Keller is expected to play the majority of the season and if that's the case, Ohio shouldn't have too much of an issue defensively even with a brand new front four.

I hope by "majority of the season" they mean 10+ games.

That's not good news if it's true. In last Saturday's press conference, Solich said he had a sore hamstring.

Hustlebelt must be thinking about Erik Benjamin or Jeff King.

I really had a great time yesterday..... even in the heat.  There is something special about Athens in the summer and I need to make more visits like these.

What struck me this morning were the comments my friend made about a few players.  Bob is a former college b-ball coach so he knows what it takes to be a successful athlete. We spent little time on the way down talkin about athletics....just life in general.  It wasn't like I set him up on any particular athlete....and he's seen about 4 Ohio games the last few years so he knows many of the returning players.

His first comment was the size of the team.  He had heard that we were much smaller this year...but he was really impressed with the offensive line.  Guys like Strum don't seem to be bigger... but I agreed with him that they had the look of a D1 college offensive line.

There were 2 guys that he surprisingly raved about...without any prompting from me.  The first was running back Beau Blankenship.  He kept saying stuff like " the guy takes a hit"....."he's hard to see and hard to tackle"....and "one of the quickest backs I've seen at Ohio".  I agreed that Beau didn't seem to be super fast....but his quick moves and darting seem to confuse and give him a step or 2 on the D.

The most surprising comments were about the QB situation.  Bell and Snyder didn't have a good practice throwin the ball...so it was obvious they didn't impress him. Tettleton he thought did OK....although he thought the hurry-up offense could be quicker. It was his raving of Derrius Vick that surprised me....he didn't know the guy nor thad he heard of him....just picked him out among the 4 as the one he thought looked like a D1 QB.  Vick did throw well and threw a wicked shovel pass during the game.  He doesn't look a rookie QB.

Someone asked about Hammonds.....he was on special teams....Bass and Hammonds were both true freshman that got yelled at for being off the field when they should have been out there.

I think Hustlebelt has corrected the story to properly identify the player as Jeff King.

Thanks, Doc, for posting your observations.  They made for very interesting reading.  I'm getting more anxious every day for the season to start.  Go OHIO!

110 Student Staff arrive in Athens on Wednesday, Freshman arrive on Friday.  Cool evening tonight in northeast Ohio and the smell of football is in the air and high school games kick off around the state on Friday.  Ohio wins 2 more than 7 in 2011.....

I gather that there was a whole lot of hurry up in the pace of which plays were run during the scrimmage.  What did that produce?...how'd the offense look?...was the execution not sloppy?...did the defense keep up?...does that get our defense better prepared?...was there a lot of substitution during a given series because of the wear on personnel?...or did we go deeper in the rotation drive to drive (with no substitution during a drive but with different guys in for different drives?

Gerald sat down in front of us with Travis Carrie and a few other players not wearing pads.....don't think he was injured and the only 2 injuires I noticed were DT's Taylor and Corey Hasting....hopefully both just minor dings.

The only 2 games of a hurry up team that I've watched at length were Wyoming a few years ago and Troy last year. In both games it seems our team was befuddled on D since we hadn't faced a hurry up team. Our scrimmage D didn't seem to bothered by it that much. Crutch had a comment on the interview video that the he was getting used to doing things like getting set....getting the D call down....observing the O....etc.etc. in only a few seconds where with a normal O you have a lot more time to get ready.

The offense looked OK...but not as fast as I thought they would look. The execution was not sloppy for the most part and since it was 2's against ones and stuff like that there weren't a bunch of substitutions. The coaches were doing lots of yelling getting the guys ready and letting them know if they were positioned right and stuff like that.

I think it will improve our offense....but also the D....especially if we face another hurry up O.
