After 10 wins & @theARIZONABOWL victory in 2022, there's a buzz for @OhioFootball 2023. The Bobcats start spring practices next week. I spoke with the reigning @MACSports Coach of the Year @CoachAlbin about bounce, health, practice, goals, depth, the portal & much more.

That might explain why he didn't jump in the portal.

He was the one player I was FOR SURE we would lose.

Keep those fingers crossed we don't lose too many in the next transfer portal window in May.

BTC has pointed out that most players in the portal are transferring down. They tend to be players who are good, but not starters, and who want to be starters. That would include players like Blauser. A minority are like Vakos, who are starters wanting to play in a BCS conference.

Vakos still has me puzzled though. A kicker can be drafted from any level, as it's easy to evaluate his performance independently of the conference. Wisconsin only attempts about half the FG, and XP as Ohio, so, even if he wins the kicking job, he will kick a lot less next year, and winning the job is no lock, as the existing Wisconsin kicker made nearly 80% of his FG attempts last year, and all of his XP. I wish him well, in his future endeavors, though, and appreciate the fine job he did for Ohio last year.

Can we get mythbusters on this? Sounds like another BA fairy tale that gets told over and over.

"Most players" are transferring "down", because "most players" are fringe players to begin with.

"Good players" are in-fact transferring up and sideways.

Well, let's look at this year's Ohio data. There are 5 players transferring up, those being:
Vakos - Ohio to Wisconsin
Daxon - Ohio to Illinois
Walter Reynolds - HOLY CROSS to OHIO
Christian Hilton - CITADEL to OHIO
Jack Kenneally - YOUNGSTOWN ST to OHIO

There is one player transferring sideways:
McCracken Ohio to Marshall

There are seven players transferring down, or looking to:
Kadin Beler - Ohio to ...
Cannon Blauser - Ohio to S Dakota
Kyle Kelly - Ohio to ...
Jamison Collier - Ohio to E.TENNESSEE STATE
Tyler Mullins - Ohio to UT MARTIN
CJ Hankins - LB Ohio to Siena Heights
Ches Jackson - OL - Colorado St to Ohio

Vakos is the first really good player I recall leaving, but recall a number of really good players coming to Ohio from various P5 teams, and a number of Ohio players moving down and doing well, such as Quinton Maxwell to Indiana University.

Of course, this is a tiny sample size but if you add the 5 plus McCracken and Jackson to the mix it’s 7 up or sideways and 7 down. Doesn’t support the most down theory but a very small sample size.

I know there is a great fear all the G5 players will hit the exits for the P5 but using last year as a data point that doesn't seem like what is going on from the 2022 data from 24/7 sports. Texas had the 5th best transfer class and had 13 players move down a level.

Top 5 Transfer Classes P5
1. USC in (18 P5/ 1 G5) out (G5/FCS 9)
2. Ole Miss in (12 P5/ 3 G5) out (G5/FCS 9)
3. LSU in (11 P5/ 3 G5) out (G5/FCS 5)
4. Oklahoma in (10 P5/ 4 G5) out (G5/FCS 7)
5. Texas in (5 P5/ 2 G5) out (G5/FCS 13)

Top 5 Transfer Classes G5
14. SMU in (12 P5/ 4 G5) out (G5/FCS 7)
15. UCF in (7 P5/ 2 G5) out (G5/FCS 5)
31. Buffalo in (11 P5/ 7 G5) out (G5/FCS 5)
32. USF in (13 P5/ 2 G5) out (G5/FCS 3)
35. Fresno St. in (8 P5/ 2 G5) out (G5/FCS 4)

From many more players are moving down from P5 to G5 than up with the top programs trading stars back and forth. G5 probably makes out better because they can pick up experience at positions of need.
Back in the transfer portal thread I posted this anlaysis which lends to the idea that...

1) P5 programs have few G5 players move up and a lot more move down to G5/FCS.
2) G5 pick up more P5 players moving down than what go the other direction.

There is playing time like TA mentioned as a reason for moving down but my guess also grades can have something to do with it particularly those going FCS/DII where the academics usually are easier.

I can't find the link, but a few weeks back I shared an analysis that showed the same is true in basketball.

Most transfers are transfers down, the second largest cohort were lateral, and transfers up were the least common.

It also speculated that the number of transfers up was actually inflated by Covid eligibility as several of them occurred after their eligibility otherwise would have been exhausted.

That is true and with the new transfer rules it was serving a pent up demand that couldn't transfer without sitting out previously.

Hilton and Kenneally are going from lower levels to walking on at Ohio. Not sure that changes your thought process but that’s something to consider as kids move around these days.

Haven’t seen many stories coming out of spring practices from the athletics department. Here is one I saw that focuses on the tight ends. Really strong position group with everyone coming back. Kacmarek and Foster might be two of the best all-around TEs in the conference. Burton and Butler have played a ton of snaps. And add in a Youngstown transfer and the position looks really strong. Would love to see more content like this from the athletics department like maybe regular updates on each position for those of us who live out of state.
