Right...Dayton competes in the Pioneer Football League, which is entirely non-scholarship. Fellow non-scholly leagues are the Ivy and Patriot League. Northeast Conference used to be, but they went scholarship a few years ago. Even without scholarships, schools like Dayton can be VERY competitive. If I'm not mistaken, Dayton has been in the FCS Top 25 several times recently.
Not to pick nits, but saying that Dayton or say, Harvard, is non-scholarship is technically accurate, but not entirely honest.
They don't give out ATHLETIC scholarships, per se, but athletes are regularly provided with ACADEMIC scholarships and financial aid, that results in many of them attending school at no cost.
And these ACADEMIC scholarships can be for some pretty esoteric reasons that look an awful lot like "tailor made for this particular student".
I'm not complaining about it; I think it's great. I think it's an excellent way to deal with Title IX nonsense, and school at no cost looks the same either way to the student athlete.
