Hello all.  I'm new to the board and I am also Marshall fan.  I have a few questions for anyone that can help me.  I've been to Athens for a basketball game, but never for a football game.  On the 17th I will attend my first game in your stadium and I would like to know what the tailgating situation is like.  There are 13 people in my group and we usually take up 4-5 parking spots and set up a canopy, flag, grill, cornhole boards, etc.  A friend of mine (his wife graduated from OU) said that he thought that a lot of people tailgated at the Convo and walked to the stadium from there.  Is this true?  Is that a private lot?  What is the cost per spot?  If this is not an option, are there other options close to the stadium?  It appears that Marshall is bringing quite a large following (I'm hearing as many as 10,000) and I'm sure there will be a sellout crowd.  I'm really looking forward to attending this game and we plan to get there early for a nice afternoon-long tailgate.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Hello!  We have some people who are very knowledgeable about tailgating...I'm sure they will respond to you.

I would say that behind the Convo is a good spot.  $5 a space is crazy cheap. Enjoy the tailgate. Hopefully you have a long drive back/

Most of the spots around the stadium are for Ohio Bobcat Club donors, all the colored lots below would be closed unless you have a OBC hang tag.

Your best bet will be the far side of the Convo and heading back towards the lots behind the softball and baseball fields.  Walk to the stadium is still under 10 minutes from back there.

I concur.....on all counts.

A few years ago I was shocked by the number of Wyoming RV's behind the convo...got to talk to some neat  people.....of course I tailgate out of the back of my pickup....kinda like what Marshall fans would do....just kiddin....haha.

All the colored lots on that map are reserved parking.

Here is a tip to get to the back convo lots -

If you are coming in to the area on Richland ave go past the stadium and just past the convo on the left is West Green Dr. If you go back there, the lots behind the Convo near the softball field (137) are the closest.

Parking is $5 per space (unless it raised this year). The closest lots fill up fast so get there early.

We are crazy if we don't charge at least $10 to park for this game. Does our athletic department just not like money?

Thanks so much everyone for the info.  The maps and the personal insight are very helpful.  $5 per space IS crazy cheap.  I was able to purchase game tickets through the OU ticket office for $10 each, I reserved a room for only $63, and now $5 parking just tops this trip off.  I'm really looking forward to the trip; Athens is a beautiful town and with all the hype around the Bobcats this should be a very exciting atmosphere and game.

To all the people that helped out; if you see a blue Expedition and a white Tahoe parked together, please stop by for a beer and a brat on us.  Oh, and to all the "wellwishers".........I'm not worried about the ride home.  Go Herd!!  (And sincerely when OU isn't playing the Herd, "Go Bobcats"!!!)

That is great to hear, I had to park at the facilities lots twice last year and that was a hike.  Funny thing is we had to walk right by the shuttles parking area and we all said it sure would be nice if they used those on game days.

and mckayt  when you are walking to the stadium if you see a tailgate set up with a huge banner like my avatar

<<<<< stop by and say Hi.  We will be in the reserved lot on the side of the convo

OU has designated a Marshall tailgating area in the lawn in front of the baseball/softball fields along Shafer street. I understand it is like an extension to tailgreat park but for Marshall fans.

What is the rule for how long before the game you can tailgate? As a student we always "tailgated" at the house before the game. At Delaware you can tailgate four hours before the game and then two hours after the game. I saw that TailGreat Park opens eight hours before the game. Can you really tailgate that long if you wanted to?

Bring some popup tents, that area has no shade.  This has the makings of being a very rowdy and interesting game/experience!

I would like to see the fairgrounds as an expanded Tailgate lot where you could camp out with tents overnight. Its only a 15 minute walk to the stadium and you've got a grocery store right across the street for cookouts.

I received an email from the Big Green (our athletics fundraiser, scholarship endowment, etc) and it talked about this tailgate.  I'm not at home and the email is on my Blackberry so I'll just share the info that was sent:

THE BIG GREEN HAS JOINED TOGETHER WITH THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AND M CLUB

MARSHALL VS OHIO TICKETS

THE MU TICKET OFFICE HAS SOLD OUR ALLOTMENT OF TICKETS.  TO ORDER TICKETS PLEASE CALL THE OU TICKET OFFICE 1-800-575-CATS

I'm very glad that I decided to make this trip; it sounds like it should be a very nice time.  It also sounds like your Athletic Department is very exicited about this game and they sure are making some nice arrangements for The Herd faithful.  I hope next year that the Bobcat faithful will come to Huntington and let us return the favors.  Also, CATFAN70, thank you for the invite.  If I see your tailgate, I will make sure I stop by to say hi.

On a side note, in my first post I mentioned that I was hearing reports that The Herd may bring as many as 10,000 fans to Athens.  I wasn't talking smack when I said that, but its nice when a visiting team can bring that many people to their opponent's stadium because it not only "livens up" the atmosphere, but it creates a financial windfall of sorts for programs like Marshall and Ohio U.  Even though many Herd fans purchased the $10 tickets that OU offered on July 4th, we still sold our allotment (I believe 5,000) of $33 tickets that you sent us.  So even if your athletic department only averages $25 per Herd fan at my estimate, that is $250,000 getting funnelled into the OU program and that doesn't count parking, concessions, hotels, etc.  Thats good stuff.  Last year when OU came to Huntington, and again I'm not talking smack, there couldn't have been more than a few hundred OU fans.  Next year, after we have a blast this year in Athens, get your butts to Huntington and lets party down at the Joan.  I guarantee we'll welcome you with hospitality and respect.

Not looking forward to hearing "We Are...Marshall" resonate through Peden again. I hope our fans are prepared to bring it, because I know Marshall fans always come out in full force.

I doubt very seriously there will be 10,000 Herd fans there. Probably more like 5,000 to 7,000. I know a lot of Herd fans bought the $10 tickets that Ohio offered this summer. The group I'll be with bought six of them.

We'll be on the RV lot. Looks like it's close to the softball field which works out well. Thanks for the info.

25% of our capacity seems likely to be Marshall fans. I don't like that. Hmm. Maybe I'll come. On a related note, I'll need a ticket.
