Thanks, herdfan07.   Good luck next week against VaTech!  I'll be rooting for a Herd upset. Stranger turnarounds from one week to the next have happened.   You ran into what some think may be the best Ohio team in 40 years.  They were really keyed on this game because everyone was telling them how long it had been since we'd won, and some of them remembered the bowl game loss.  It was a perfect storm.  Marshall will win a lot of games this year.  Don't despair.

Thanks.  You have better times ahead.  Cato's a young QB who's going through the learning process.  He should be a lot better a year from now.  I hope you do well next week.  I had an instructor in law school who cheated me out of some discretionary points and cost me a letter grade.  She went to VT.  Since then, I've hated that school.

I stayed off the board after the pre-game conversations fell apart.  Wanted to come back and say congrats.  Hope you guys win them all.  A few comments:

I had a good time (other than the game) in Athens.  You have so much open space for tailgating.  Nice.  The setting is just a great time.  Your team played harder and just all around whipped us.  I was very impressed with the QB and RB.  It is obvious Marshall is not very good, but that said, we do have a good defensive line (I still believe that) and you just have a great offensive line.  You just whipped us all night.  Great great performance by you all.

I sat behind a 19 year season ticket holder and had good conversations all night.  Also, after all of your frustrations and the beat down you put on us, not one single Ohio fan taunted me when leaving.  Very classy bunch.

The only thing I could possibly classify as a complaint (more of something that just puzzles me) is why so many of your fans were gone after halftime.  The side opposite the press box thinned way down.  After all the years of frustration (especially against us), you have a great football team and were just destroying us on a great night.  Why leave?  Soak it up.  These are the good times.  I am sure I am preaching to the choir here.

Well, your excellent coach ate our staff's lunch last night.  One good thing came out of this for Marshall.  What I saw last night gave birth to a real, live rivalry.  Just watch.  This rivalry will blow up now.  Next year in Huntington.  The year after in Athens.  This thing will start rocking.  That will be nice.

Great game.  I knew we could lose, but the manhandling shocked me.  You never let up, were well coached, played hard, and just flat had better players.  Good luck with Rutgers.  I may stop in from time to time if you don't mind.

That's the student section. It was a Saturday night, and they wanted to drink. If the game had been closer, MAYBE more would have stayed, but this has been a problem for a long time. The legend is that the reason that side of the stadium was built is so you couldn't see the stream of students walking back to the dorms after the band finishes playing.

That side was the student side, which was pretty full again for the second straight game. I was impressed with the turnout of students again. Many did leave at halftime, which in many past seasons has been because Ohio was losing badly by then. It was probably the opposite last night. And unfortunately, Ohio State was playing, and many of them probably went home to go watch them unfortunately. I know I wasn't about to leave. I hope the rivalry does continue to grow, and we don't mind fans stopping by. Thanks for the compliments.

May I also suggest that it had something to do with an o$u being on television?

Edit: Ahhh, Upsan beat me to it.

Yeah, that too, but I'm in denial mode over that.

If the students did go somewhere to watch the Bucknuts, maybe that bad habit has been cured with the "wunnerful" showing against the U.

That was our student section.  It's been getting better but they always leave at the half.  A lot probably wanted to see the OSU game since it was obvious that it was a blowout in Peden but there has always been a problem with keeping all the students in the stadium...

I sat in the upper corner of that section, right above the student entrance gate.  During the mass exodus after the band played, I made it perfectly clear that it was not acceptable to leave the game.  "Dear OU students, why are you leaving?!  This is a trophy game!"

I hope that got through to someone, but I doubt it.

No doubt the Marshall fan base is larger and a whole lot more loyal. Huntington is surrounded by several other smaller cities in that Tristate area that are all larger than Athens. Also, aren't  Marshall and WVU the only D1 universities in WestByGod? I think I am accurate in saying that Ohio has quite a few more which split the fan base. Last year I attended the Marshall/Ohio clash at "The Joan" and I was very impressed by the size of the crowd and their intensity. Again, those are qualities of teams whose fans do not need to drive more than a 100 miles to a home game. Sizes of crowds and loyalty of fans do not make a team, football players do however, and our team wanted that game last night. Too bad the Marshall team didn't. Still, it was a pretty good thrashing. I have enjoyed reading the Herd message boards today and all of the blame being cast here and there for their abysmal performance. No credit, by the way to our team's performance; they are apparently poorly coached and too young to be playing college ball. One theme that seems to run through a lot of their posts is their distress at losing to a mere MAC team. I had no idea that CUSA was such a lofty achievement for another appalachian school. In fact, I thought when they squeezed by us in the Pizza Bowl that we were a formidable opponent at that time and even last year at their place. Now we are "just a MAC school." Perhaps there will be a day in the future that they can become bowl eligible again and will get to play another one of those inferior MAC opponents. Maybe Temple needs to consider CUSA. The thought processes of the fan bases are eerily similar. They are just too good for us!

The last game that I can remember when virtually all of the students stayed for the entire game -- including the OT period was the Pitt game in '05 season.  That was a magical night.

If I remember right they mostly stayed for the Toledo night game of that season too, but we lost that game and kind of sputtered to the end for the last couple games if I remember right.

Pitt and Toledo '05, Wyoming '07, and CMU '08 are the only games I can remember where most students stayed into the 3rd quarter. Even the East-clinching Akron game in '06 saw kids leave.

I'd like to think that the students were satisfied with our dominating performance and wanted to make sure they weren't late to parties. If they left to watch the end of the Buckeyes game, then I'd like to throw a special thank you to the U.

I'd like to thank the Marshall fans who came on this thread with some nice compliments.

Let's face it...there is no excuse for the mass exodus of students so early in the game...I could see it if it were early fourth quarter or thereabouts...but the current situation with the mass exodus at the half illustrates that we are still in the developmental stage of really building a football program/fan base at Ohio University.

Yes, you're right about the UT game.  It was also nationally televised, if I recall correctly.  Perhaps that's a key.

Also, my memory of the Akron East title clinching game is different.  It was a good -- not great -- student turnout [in finals week?].  But, of those students who came nearly all stayed until the end.  Most of them were wearing white t-shirts -- for a "white out" appearance.  Looked good!

So, let me amend my previous statement  based on later memory-refreshing posts:

The last three games I can remember where there was not some level of a mass exodus of students after halftime were:

1. Pitt '05 (when nearly everyone stayed into the OT)
2. UT '05
3. Akron '06

I'm defining "mass exodus" as being at least 25 percent or more of the student crowd.

In terms of Wyoming '07 and CMU '08, I do remember decent crowds late in the game, but I can't remember what percent of the students left after halftime.
