When you think about it, Temple might be a better future pickup for the ACC, along with WVU.

ECU supposedly turned down, again, by the Big East.

I think UCF and Memphis are probably the more attractive CUSA candidates for the Big East. And I think the Big East has sent a pretty consistent "don't call us, we'll call you" message to ECU.

On the Marshall board they mention picking up Ohio along with some other schools if some of its current schools bolt. Personally I would be furious if Ohio ever made that move. I hate Conference USA. Its comprised of a bunch of schools that want to be in some other conference and landed there because their desired conference is not available to them. When Cincinnatk and Louisville were there then yes it would have been attractive. But now? No way! I was wondering what others on this board thought?

No way, not without at least 3 other MAC schools bolting as well.

Honestly, if there is an opening to get out of the joke of a league we are currently in, do it!  Unless the MAC does a serious overhaul, I see this conference going nowhere fast.

If you get the chance, check The Post from last Tuesday (a week ago) and read the article about Marshall and their move to the C-USA. While we all pan the fact that they have greater travel costs, their television rights paycheck alone pays off the majority of that travel expenses.

The main reason that Marshall left the MAC was the fact that the MAC TV contract paid out BARELY 150k a year. The first contract that Marshall got from C-USA was upwards of $800,000. When you look at numbers like that, it makes sense to move conferences. College football today is simply put, all about money. Receiving a payout of nearly $800,000 a year and enabling OUr team to be seen across a wider TV market as well as being seen by more fans would make for a very interesting prospect. It would also enable the Athletic Department to direct less funds to football and more to other programs (by football becoming more self-sufficient), which would help to strengthen them.

I would not be totally against a move to C-USA.

I would sign a contract with CUSA before the ink was even dry on the offer letter. I realize its no Big East but we need to move and get out of this sinking ship that is the MAC. The Sun Belt and MAC (-Temple) are bound for FCS status when all the reallignment settles.  Its sink or swim time, we need to make a move and FAST. Those who are not seeking opportunities right now will be left out in the cold. If you want Ohio to quickly become Ohio Weslyn then stay status quo with your beloved Akrons and EMU's. Other than low travel costs (which would be subsidized by new CUSA TV revenue ) there is nothing good about the MAC. Nothing. I cant even fathom why anyone would want to stay in this conference.

The decision to bolt should be made jointly with Miami if it is ever made. Much like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Miami's  best interest is in Ohio's best interest. Same program level. Same demographics. A rivalry.  Together they would worth much more to a conference than as an individual school. The same goes for BG and Toledo.

The school I'm stunned hasn't been more involved in talks with other conferences is Northern Illinois. They are an attractive option on the football side, in my opinion. Accessibility to Chicago market, proven football success and the ability to grow as a basketball program if given the budget, with St. Louis and Chicago recruits in the region.

What makes you guys think CUSA is any more viable than the Big 12 or Big East? Nearly every single school in CUSA is trying to figure out how to get out. Say what you will about the MAC going nowhere...but at least it can stay afloat. If you go to CUSA now, right as the big boys appear to be kicking the can down the road to 2014, all you're doing is pissing off people who you might need later on. Ask Marshall fans about their options if the Big East takes half of CUSA East but not Marshall. They're HOPING the MAC forgives them for leaving and allows them to come back.

We could goto CUSA tomorrow, then it could all fall apart next year and the MAC officials would be waiting with open arms waiting to take us back. They're spineless. This is a conference that doesnt have the guts to kick EMU out, took in Temple and UMASS for football only, and gets pushed around and beaten like a red headed step child when it comes to negotiations.

You are correct that the MAC would take Marshall back in a heartbeat.  Right now the MAC needs Marshall a lot more than Marshall needs the MAC.  I will add that I am not a fan of Marshall.

Interesting read in this morning's paper from AP.  The article states that apparently the Big East is looking to Navy and the Air Force with invites to join the BE.  It also says that ECU has submitted an app to the BE but that appears to be going nowhere fast.  And finally, WVU's AD is quoted as stating: "We are, and will remain, a national player in college athletics."  That translates as "as soon as we can get out of the Big East, we are going."  UConn is also mentioned as a real possibility to leave the Big East as well.  If I am TCU, I am having my legal team review the BE contract to see how to get out as well.

What we and perhaps Miami (O) should be doing is thinking outside the conventional box and looking to join/form a new league with the remains of the Big East, Big 12,  ConfUSA and other invites.  There are still good teams that may very well miss the boat with all of the shake-up going on and we could join with them to form a new league.

In short, I agree with previous posts that if the MAC does not take positive action, we might as well call the OAC and see if we could join them.  The travel expenses to New Concord and Marietta would greatly lessen the burden our athletics place upon this institution.  Just kidding.

Throw in Marshall, Louisville, Rutgers and maybe Kansas State and Kansas.  Then toss out at least EMU and possibly a couple more (Akron and one more directional) and you start to get a good league.  At that time Temp and UMass would also have to be all in.

Yes to booting EMU, Kron, BallS, and one of Kent or CMU to bring in new blood. But Louisville, Rutgers, KSU, and Kansas? Ain't gonna happen, my friend. We'd be better off looking to Charlotte and the CAA to grab new markets.

I disagree that the MAC needs Marshall. The Marshall that joined the MAC in the 90's is not the same program that it is today. NCAA probabtion has taken its toll on what was once a very strong program. They still have a nice fan base but make no mistake that fan base has eroded. This weeks game at home vs. Virginia Tech is not even close to selling out. That would not have been the case in the late 90's. That being said, as much as I hate Marshall it was a good fit having them in the conference from a rivalry stand point. As for ohio changing conferences I am open to the idea but it has to make long term sense. I am just not sure anything about CUSA is long term. Every school in that conference wants to be somewhere else. As someone else metioned previously I would be more comfortable making the move if Miami were involved. I also have zero interest in being in the same conference with UTEP. A conferece with marshall, miami, southern miss, Temple, ECU, UCF plus a few withers would be interesting. Just my opinion.

As for the ohio wesleyan comment I have this to say as a fan of d3 sports(especially lacrosse and football).ohio wesleyan is a d3 program and one of the worst football progams in that division.  God help anyone who sinks to that level.Also they  are the biggest bunch of snobs I have ever seen. They really believe they have as good a school as kenyon or denison.

Ohio is better off in the MAC. The traditions, rivalries and history are all there. Plus, I do not see the MAC as  a sinking ship, sure several programs are bottom feeders but every conference has them. Any chance of Vandy or Ole Miss winning the SEC in the near future?
I think a better plan would be constantly ranked as one of the best in the MAC. Win and win some more and the notoriety will come.
Big East is in it's death tremors, nobody should climb aboard that train!

If C-USA breaks up, I think there is a number of very real, viable additions that could be made. Memphis for one would be a great addition. It would expand us to the south and if we could get them in basketball it would really boost our conference.

Marshall would be another choice. Regional rival, strong fan base.

Southern Miss would also be a school I would like to see. They have had sustained, low level success but have proven that they are not a FCS team anymore.
Finally, I would take SMU. Granted, they have had their issues in the past but they are on the rebound and it would be a great media boost to be the conference holder when they do finally return to some prominence. Additionally, the inclusion of SMU would extend the MAC into Texas, and I think we all know how much Texas loves football.

I'd love to know what some of the people on this site are smoking...to think that most/any MAC and CUSA teams have the resources to be in the Top 64 is a pipe dream.  I wish it weren't the case but it is.  Probably all we can really hope to do is schedule the right BCS schools and beat 'em once in a while.  Like maybe Rutgers this year?  Or, ILL a few years back or Pitt.  But to really think we can compete week in and week out with even the current Big East schools is a bit far fetched.

Stay in the MAC. Let's not forget people, it was not that long ago that we were one of the worst football teams in the nation. If Frank should ever go or if there is a shake up within the university and the commitment to football goes away, we could be right back where we were. We are in a very difficult situation seated in Buckeye land. It's hard to recruit top quality talent to Ohio (even though we do have the prettiest campus on planet earth). Our sports teams have never been big money makers. They are there to make the overall experience of our students an outstanding one. I never get over people wanting OHIO to be something it is not. Frankly, I don't want us to become Ohio State (besides, we could never pay the players enough). I live in Milwaukee, and the people here are always trying to compare us to Chicago. We will NEVER be Chicago so why not highlight the great qualities we do have. OHIO is the same way. Each year everyone freaks out about our party school reputation. Embrace it! We are what we are. A great school that's always striving for greatness, but grounded in reality. Oh yhea, and we know how to have fun. Get over it.

Staying in the MAC is the smart move. You have the MAC tournament in Cleveland in hoops and MAC title game in Detroit. We don't travel well and playing Rice, Tulane, and UTEP is not a step up.  Memphis, Houston, UCF and ECU could be long gone we would be stuck in a Texas league with Mashall thousand miles from our fans and rivals.  Throw away all the tradition to play Tulane and Rice in all sports. We play Mashall non-conference in football and basketball now.  The CUSA with the TV money assumes UCF and  Memphis are in the conference. Marshall is not competitive in CUSA. Ohio is competitive in the MAC.  Ohio doesn't have the money to spend to compete against the best of CUSA  or join the Big East for that matter. Money limits us just like it does for the other teams in the MAC. Let Marshall and ECU join the MAC. That could happen if both realize they aren't getting an invite to the Big East ever.
