And, by rule, once a game has been declared final, the winner cannot change. As I understand it, the absolute most that could happen would be Syracuse vacating the win, of their own accord. Still a loss in the record books for Toledo.

It sucks, but Toledo had a chance to win that game on their final drive of regulation. Toledo had a chance to win the game in OT too. They held syracuse to a FG, sans interception Toledo could have won (with a TD) or taken it to a second OT (FG). There was game left after the botched call.

Bad call.  No doubt.  No guarantee that the game would have been the same from that point forward even if the right call would have been made.  Maybe Syracuse would have played better defense with a 2 point lead than with a 3 point lead..maybe the place kicker for Toledo would have choked with a game winning kick instead of a game tying kick.  Who knows.

I agree that there is no remedy for Toledo here. There were over 2 minutes left in the game when the call occurred. Who knows how each team would have played it if it was a 2-point game? Plus, Toledo had a 1st-and-goal from the 9 and couldn't punch it in.

However, if I were MAC Commissioner, I would privately be lobbying that the game and replay official be suspended for the remainder of the season and that it should be announced publicly. From what I've been able to find, Big East football refs make between $600-$1,000 a game plus expenses. So if you pull $5K-$10K out of their pockets and make it public, maybe it'll make other BCS refs stop and think.

I also think there should have been a MAC replay official. I noticed that during the LSU/WVU game they had SEC refs and Big East replay officials. The BCS schools who are writing the checks would probably still insist on having their crews on the field so they can continue to throw bogus flags. But having a MAC replay official would at least give the appearance of checks and balances. If there were a MAC replay official who made the Toledo/Syracuse call, we would be talking about his incompetence vs. the appearance of something improper going on like we are now.

If you watch the play close in slow motion it is clear the extra point is no good. The ball  is seen when passing in front of the upright. If it had gone through first and then gone wide it would have not been seen for a split second while passing behind the upright.
