True.  Except it's not for two reasons:

1)  If your internal gauge of integrity and what's right don't tell you that the original post was not called for, then you need to do some thinking.

2)  I post here under my real name.  Most of you find it convenient for whatever reason to use an alias.  But directly calling out a player by his name (instead of some general moniker such as 'the d-line' or 'the defense') is okay?

Sorry.  Reminds me too much of corporate CEO's who pay themselves a fortune while their workers get laid off or don't make much.  If you want to find a reason to justify your position you will.  But anyone with a sense of justice will see through it.

So since basically anything negative mentioning player's names should be avoided because we are the nice, kumbaya Ohio University, we should be watching what we put on ohiobobcats.com after games. If DJ Cooper has a bad shooting night, they better not dare say Cooper struggled. I remember ohiobobcats.com used to run a thing every week for baseball, and they'd say who was hot, and who was "a bit chilly." I think this would fall under your category of piling on an innocent college kid by name.

Also, I don't want to hear the radio guys ever say "____ has to catch that pass." since all those huddled around their radios across SE Ohio don't want to 18-23 year olds called out.

Here's the reality Monroe. You want us to become more big time, I'm sure as much as anyone. We need to stop this YMCA biddy league mentality surrounding our players. Everyone who was watching the game already knows the player who was causing penalties, the player himself was probably just as frustrated. One little thread on one message board is not going to crush this kid. I hope all our athletes are a bit tougher than that. It boggles my mind how uptight people get on this board at the smallest hint of controversy.

The more we get invested in games, the more fans that jump aboard to root for a winning team, the more the games matter...this all comes with a price. There are going to be times when people on here, facebook, twitter, etc. are going to hate individually on OUr beloved Bobcats. If you want all individuals immune to being called out individually, we better become an intramural squad.

I am on the side that when you have a professional athlete, it's appropriate to call out that player by name, but when you have an amateur athlete, it generally is not. College football players are in that gray area in between. They aren't strictly professional, but they do get full scholarships (well, 85 of them do) that have substantial monetary value. Therefore I think they fall somewhere in between, and some minimal calling out by name may be OK. I think that the edited title to this tread is more appropriate than the original.

I also think that the players probably should not come here. Ohio fans are generally good fans, but still, the players only need to worry about doing what the coaches want, not the fans. I think it is to be expected that the player's parents will come here, though. Therefore, the rule I would suggest is that people only post calling out a player what they would be willing to tell that player's parent to their face, because that's in fact what they are doing.

This thread is a great example of why we need to get the chat going again.

Either you has maturity (think before act) and you recognizes right from wrong or you don't.

You can post all day long here with all the invective you want (so long as the moderators don't kick you off).

But it dont make it right.

And still no one addresses that most here (seems about 80-90%) post using an alias.  If that privacy is so important to you, is it the same standard to call a player out in a hard manner by name.

I'm okay if you say that a given player needs to work on his jump shot or made a bad decision in throwing that pass.  But a screaming headline with the f word in it--if your gut don't tell you that's over the line.....Well, we'll never see eye to eye on this one.

Othewise, I apologize.  I'm a she-devil when I'm hungry.

I'm not going to weigh in on the issue one way or another. I will say that some people have aliases because they like them, not to keep their anonymity. I think DelBobcat sounds cool. I would readily put my real name out there though. See, here is my fbook page:

Well, I guess you can pass me a snickers bar also on this.

I think I got my point across.  Catatonic hit the nail on the head.

MAYBE I just MIGHT have taken this too personally.  I know this kid pretty well.  He is my sons best friend and roommate for over 3 years, I helped feed the kid.  He was at my wedding....he is a friend.  I know that he could not have been more proud to wear that #62 in this game.

Apologies to any that I might have offended.

I think L.C. said it best: Don't say anything you wouldn't say if the player's mother or father was sitting next to you in the stands watching the game.  Well, that's a paraphrase of L.C.'s point, but I think it is saying the same thing.

I hate to post anything else here as I wish for this topic to die, but Monroe, of all people, you have absolutely ZERO credibility on this topic. None. Zilch. Nada. So far, I think you're the only Bobcat to ever be banned from our board, and you know why.

I made an in-game criticism of a play on the field, and if anyone else wants to call out the tone of my post, or is against me mentioning a player by name, I can accept that criticism and admitted my mistake putting up a new topic for what would essentially be one quickly forgotten line in the chat room. Again... anyone else. Not you.

DCF--That's absurd.  I was banned here for no good reason at all.  Never received a single word as to why that action occurred.  I never got a chance to respond.  It was g-a-r-b-a-g-e the whole way.  Cowardice.  There have been a good number of posts up here that were well beyond what I posted.  But, there's no concern here for  consistency in treatment.  Hey, I guess if you have no sense of justice, DCF, and will not consider anything I post merely because you don't like me, then there's no discourse.

Exactly. That's why we had the chats... things burn out quickly and this ugliness doesn't linger for several days. Resurrect it!

And I think we need to ease back on the whole "justice, right and wrong" thing. DCF has admitted his post wasn't a great idea. And he's known for, uh, getting colorful during games. At worst, this is a minor offense. Nothing you wouldn't hear in the stands or at a bar.

And I wish the nonsense about usernames would cease.

Not exactly true Dragon.  There have been lurkers in the chat who report back to parents on what was said about their son in the chat.  Believe me, it happened to me based on one of my comments.

Okay, I'm good with whatever we've done here...'cept to say  that the the 'alias' argument is valid.  No need to get into it further at this time.  Let's save it for a real throwdown in the summer off-season.  For now, let's smash kents and how 'bout them hoopsters?!
