I love our team on paper, but my eyes tell me something just isn't right based on the past two games.  I understand injuries are piling up with a lot of key players, but our killer instinct is just nowhere to be found on the field.  The mental mistakes are just too numerous to list.  We have had two games full of stupid penalties at the worst possible times, blocked field goals, blocked punts, turnovers and overall sloopy, undisciplined play.  We should have witnessed a 25 point win today based on the statistics, but instead needed a defensive stop with 1:00 left in the game to seal the victory.

This was supposed to be our year.  The team is really solid.  The schedule is the most favorable we have had in 30 years.  I'm sure the coaching staff sees this and is trying to get back the swagger that was there during the Marshall.  I am happy the team is 4-1, but to run the rest of the schedule, they are going to need to drop the hammer early and often on their opponents.

Definitely need to get that mojo back from the Marshall game.  Today was not impressive to say the least.

I think we saw one answer today: if we need to run clock, bring in Bates.  Boykin had a quietly good game (22 carries, 76 yards) but they were keying on him a lot.  Bates in the wildcat with Boykin gives that added dimension.

I doubt we'll see the intensity of the Marshall game again before the Temps game.  I'm beginning to wonder if this team is a night, fair weather team.  The first three games were night games played under nearly ideal conditions.  The last two were day games with less than ideal conditions.  They have three more day games before wrapping up with four night games.

The offense needs Donte Harden back.  That will open a lot of things up.  His loss the past two weeks and the offensive struggles are no coincidence.

I thought the defense looked awesome today despite the early loses to two key players.  It might be time to look at burning a redshirt to add depth on the DL.  All teams are dealing will injuries this time of year.  I am confident that Frank will be able to find the right players to plug the holes.

The blocks (punt/FG) will get addressed.  The protection will improve just like the kickoff coverage has gotten much better.

It would have been nice to have Harden today.  He's having a fine year and was fabulous today.  But Boykin was good today and the way that kents plays the run--well, I'm not sure how much more Harden would have helped.

When Bates is in at qb, we don't have much passing option.  Yes, he helped chew up valuable clock and gained a lot of yards when he was in at qb.  But we got a ton of yards in the middle of the field today.  Our problem was scoring.  Didja notice what the last two plays with Bates at qb got for us?  We need for him to throw or to be used as a decoy in some way--no way he can gain yards every play if everyone in the stadium knows that it's gonna be a running play.

This.

Harden is an offensive key and another big body on defense will be huge (no pun intended.)  True freshman Tony Davis has already played...but we probably could use one more.  I thought for sure tat big Antwan Crutcher would be the guy...maybe it's time.

Also...I'm no doctor (oops yes I am) but I was standing close to the locker room entrance when Huynh walked by....under his own power with ice on the knee....maybe he can come back in a few weeks.

I don't remember a pass more than 5 yards down field. We not once sent anyone long. In my opinion, if we play like this I see losses to Temple, BG, and Central.

Don't worry.  We won't play like this.  Frank always adjusts his game plan to the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition.  We had some really nice pass plays for long yardage against Rutgers; however, we also had some really horrible fumbles that put us in a deep hole that we never could crawl out of.

They had at least two.  If you look at the recap on website, Brazill had about a 20-yarder over the middle and his TD was to the back of the end zone from the 4.  The weather also played a part of the short passing game.  At least one of the picks Kent threw seemed to have been affected by the wind (not the option pass; that was just lousy), and Weller's missed FG was knocked down by the wind.

I remain confident. I just feel the next few games will be closer and not as pretty in terms of stats or execution.  Not a reflection on the team/coaches overall just a result of a rash of injuries.

Weller also seemed to put more air under the ball than normal on that kick, no doubt due to the penetration Kent was getting.

I was disappointed in several phases, including Tettleton, who was lucky not to have gimme INT's run back for points on two occasions.  He also badly missed receivers on some slants.  Seemed very indecisive on a number of occasions and reluctant to tuck it and run when he had lots of open space in front of him.

We were just plain lucky Kent couldn't catch the ball.  This probably should have been an L.

TT is #3 IN THE MAC in ttl offense, not because he is tucking it and running, but because he has receivers that don't quit and given time he will find one.  I refuse to quible about these players or coaches as I believe they have been giving great effort and hey, there is another team on the field that will have something to say about a play or two during a game.

Good Gawd...We beat a team with a solid physical D that's had our number for years in horrible weather no less. The Coaching staff had a gameplan in place to nullify the issues we've had with them and we walked away with a W. We're 4 - 1 going into Buffalo.

GO CATS!

Ditto. Yes we're dinged up, but this is about as good a stretch of games coming up that we could ask for. BallS is better than expected, but at home, we should be fine. BUGS and Temple are lingering but their October schedules are much worse than ours. We just gotta keep winning. How does not matter.

Amen!

Everyone needs to keep in mind that other teams get dinged up too...As always, it'll be a factor across the board...

The statistics indicate that we seriously controlled Kent State.  We just didn't follow through by putting more points on the board.  This should have been a comfortable score.  Only our mental mistakes (penalties, etc.) kept this from being a 14-17 point win.

Hope that the mental mistakes lessen for Buffalo.

I'll agree that Tettleton wasn't at his sharpest, but the dude still was 28 of 42 for 270 some yards...how can we complain about that?!?!?

We need to keep in mind that the "win and advance" term used in basketball post season play can probably be applied to MAC football.  The important thing is to win and advance.

Injuries are the most serious issue right now.  We need folks to step up and replace the guys who are out.  Captain Obvious.

Next:  Buffalo.

Was thinking that very thing after looking through the game notes...

We owned just about every aspect of that game.  We had a few Special Teams issues but the Defense absolutely dominated and statistically we rolled on O (almost doubled Cant's total offensive yards) ...

As far as T2 goes...Really I think we're beyond spoiled at this point if anyone has a criticism.  There's a reason he won MAC player of the week (again)...

Hmmm...waiting for the obligatory SBH slam against the MAC in response to your link...

I ditched the tie several years ago.  Sweater vest emerges a coupla times a season.

About 15 completions were bubble screens.  If that's a true test of QB talent, so be it.  If Kent's CB had held onto the pass thrown into his chest and strolled into the end zone in Q3, we'd be having a different discussion today.

Oh, wait, you didn''t attend the game, did you, Chip?

I'll leave it to those who actually joined me in Peden to tell me if they felt TT was "sharp" on Saturday and didn't badly miss receivers on several short routes.

I think it was the play calling.....and hopefully it was because of the weather.

After about 13 bubble screens I yelled "Bubble screens suck" and scared a couple of old ladies and a young kid.

It wasn't his best game, but it wasn't a great day to be passing, which probably dictated in part the game plan to not throw downfield as much. The fact is he got the job done and that's all that matters.

Not to diminish the win too much as we did what we had to do.  But kents' offense ain't much.
