Sounds like they'll be MWC in August when we're there but probably not a year or so from now.

Interesting back-and-forth between SDSU and the MWC. all that talk of leaving back in March, plus their previous attempt at leaving, made it easy for MWC to play hardball. No love lost there.

So where does MWC go to replace the Aztecs and maybe one other school (Boise?) that the Pac12 could pluck? Do they convince the other SDSU (South Dakota State) to move up? Or do they raid CUSA or SBC?

There is a rumor it could be SDSU, Arizona, Colroado and UConn to the Big 12 to create a 4 timezone configuration. Pac12 then could be looking at Colorado St and UNLV to backfill to 10, perhaps more to return to 12. That leaves the MWC in shambles and Air Force would reconsider the AAC, perhaps with Boise State football only if they can't get into Pac12.

UTEP, NMSU and Sam Houston St. are about automatic admits to the MWC in a firesale situation. They won't be able to pull in anyone from the SBC as they have a nice TV deal with ESPN. They might pull in FCS programs if the TV deal in the MWC requires 12 members. South Dakota State football only with the olympic sports staying in the Summit League could be workable.

Hi Bobcat fans this is Steve from the Aztec board again. I hope all is well with you we're going through a melodrama down here. I wish I could add something enlightening to the conversation but we're all in the dark and listening to rumors all over the place. I also wish I could say I knew the Aztec Administration was really on the ball and on top of things but my experience is they're not. they can do some absolutely stupid things as in attacking whistleblowers and getting sued for you know 10-15 million. the AD we got is pretty decent as far as a lot of things he certainly did great work getting the new stadium up but he's not terribly Progressive about football as coach Hoke has been a substantial drop off from Rocky. Hopefully will get an invite to the Pac-12. if that falls through I'm sure they'll be a last-minute deal with the big 12 and our main hang-up there is the travel. We might make an arrangement with Yormack as we did back with a big East where we park our non-revenue Sports in the Big West which is mainly made up of California schools California State University schools in particular. However, the experts in the Pac-12 like John Wilner and John Canzano seem to believe the Pac-12 needs us for its inventory to go from 65 games to 80 games to get a decent deal. the rumor is the deal will be around 32 million with heavy streaming but we'll see.

As for the football team, I can't see them doing any better than seven and five, and possibly could have the first losing season in 15 years. we all had a good laugh when Phil Steele came out and said we have a top-notch offense, defense and special teams. Our offense last year was 108th in scoring and something like 120th in total offense. I don't see how anyone could go from that to Top Notch without bringing in 10 portal guys.

We all have some familiarity with Brady Hoke as he coached in the MAC, at Ball State, from 2003-2008. Most of his teams were mediocre (which isn't bad at Ball State), but he had a very good team in 2008 that went 12-1. Looking at his long term record, he seems to have a lot of mediocre teams, and a few good ones, but he was very successful in leveraging some of those good seasons into higher paying jobs. His good seasons were:
Ball State, 2008: 12-1
San Diego St, 2010: 9-4
Michigan, 2011: 11-2
San Diego St, 2021: 12-2

So, he was 44-9 in those four seasons, and has been 57-75 in his other years. He used the 2008 success to move up to SDSU, then used the 2010 season to move up to UM. His early success at UM in 2011 allowed him to keep the UM job a few years, but since then it has been a struggle. He will need at least several more seasons like 2021 to get another shot at P5. He's not a bad coach, and has a long track record, but his lack of success at P5 may allow you to keep him awhile.

I don't think you need to worry about an invite to the P12. It's coming as the P12 really doesn't have any other choice. It may not come as soon as SDSU likes to avoid the $34M buyout from the MWC, but it's going to happen. And it will probably coincide with the announcement of their new media rights deal, which hopefully comes soon!

The question is becoming who's coming with them. SMU has been the long rumor, and have basically stated they'd pay to be in the league. I just don't see that working well (think WVU in the Big 12 only worse), but again they're running out of options. Personally, I think the league presidents and ADs need to have a sit down with the brass at Stanford, Cal and UW and tell them to relax the academic restrictions a little bit. Let in Fresno and Boise too, from a purely football product standpoint. What have you got to lose?

P12 could try to grab more central time zone teams. Go to 14 with SMU, Tulane and Memphis which takes them off the table for another power conference. Boise travels to bowls really well and belongs. Fresno I believe is a step too far for Stanford and Cal academically.

The numbers Here make me feel better about our game in August but it's clear SDSU is at a stage where they are nursing Hokes staff to not rock the apple cart while they look for that P5 invite. By a large margin at this moment Hoke has his best chance of returning to a power job by not losing his job at San Diego St.

That would be something. Make the outcome of a game determine who picks up the upgrade. They should have made UCF/USF and Cincnnati/Memphis fight for their Big 12 spots.

P12 could try to grab more central time zone teams. Go to 14 with SMU, Tulane and Memphis which takes them off the table for another power conference. Boise travels to bowls really well and belongs. Fresno I believe is a step too far for Stanford and Cal academically.
They will owe the full $34M because they don't have another conference yet. The announcement they made earlier this month wasn't a formal notice. SDSU isn't going to make a formal notice until they know for sure they're in the P12. And as expected, the MWC isn't granting exceptions.

Now the attorneys will get even more involved, because according to a story by The Athletic, SDSU sent four letters to the Mountain West Conference stating their formal intention to leave, while also asking for the extension.

NIL is a big factor against moving anywhere. The TV money in a P5 would be sufficient to bump up the coaching pay to compete but the donor base isn't there to pay the players. The MAC gives us a conference with similar economics. Buffalo in Amherst NY might be near one of the bigger markets in the MAC but the average income is low around there.

One has to make more in Chicago to maintain the same standard of living as a lower income would afford in some of these other cities, just saying.

What if…..

Athens county annexed all the surrounding counties: Hocking, Meigs, Washington, Vinton, Morgan and Perry. Then our metro area shows bigger population numbers. Then we increase Peden to 50k seating. P5 here we come babeeee!!

About three-quarters of Ohio was once Washington County, so Marietta has the real claim on the 50K stadium!

Peden is 28,000 now? The official game notes from the past few years have said 27,000 so that could be interesting. Is the university still racing toward that magical number of 30,000? Marshall has downgraded stadium capacity to 30,457 as attendance has deteriorated in Huntington. I thought they were knocking it down to 32-33k not all the way down to 30k.

So if according to the basketball board the arena addition is going to be 1) Visitor Center, 2) Digital Media Room, 3) Basketball Courts then a second weight room is probably not in the cards for The Convo. Thus the next project will likely be an expanded weight room/performance center at Peden. The Carrin Center at 10,000 sqft was very good size and design for its time but its not on par with the two level weight rooms that are now out there. Buffalo is in the process of doubling their weight room.

With the less is more facility approach at Ohio with the idea of trying to always tie in non-athletic related purposes to any faciliites I wouldn't hold my breath on anything substantial happening to the stadium. What would it cost to enlarge Victory Hill with 4,000 permanent seats and ribbon boards to get it across the 32,000 line? Turn the current weight room into a student athlete dining hall and build two level one on the other side. 2035? 2040?
