So we're going to have Parents weekend with no BIG campus event? Do the department of student affairs and the athletics department not communicate with one another?

This five-Saturday home slate offers an opportunity to capitalize on extra audience for every game if the university had some more forward thinking. What about this?

LIU: Band Day
Iowa State: P5 team in town, should be a big crowd anyway
Kent State: Homecoming
Western Michigan: Parents Weekend
Miami: Halloween - each student gets one guest in free as long as that guest has a valid college ID


From a revenue standpoint, hosting parents weekend on an off football weekend actually makes more sense for the city of Athens. I wonder if that's part of the thinking.
You'll have to explain that one to me. Without a game, many students, whose parents just dropped them off 14 days earlier, aren't going to have their parents coming to town.

When you look at starting it a week late or ending it a week early probably half the teams or more don't play 4 mid-week games. The last time we didn't, if my quick research is correct, was 2014, excluding 2020. That's 7 years in a row. So the odds of that happening at random are about the same as getting seven head in a row on a coin flip or maybe even worse. That's less than a 1% chance. So I was beginning to wonder if ESPN wanted us or if we wanted Tuesday and Wednesday games.

You'll have to provide me the same evidence that the secret draw of parents weekend was Ohio football. When I was there, lots of parents came. None that I knew went to the football game.

From a revenue standpoint, hotel rooms and restaurants fill up from football games. Each home game is a reliable weekend of spending.

By hosting parents weekend on on off weekend, you create a new new weekend of spending.

Didn't say it was a secret draw but it is something to do with your parents when they come to town only two weeks after dropping you off. It will be impossible to prove but I would bet that more parents would come if there was a game that if there wasn't. On the athletics department side, not having a parents weekend game is clearly a hit on revenue for the department.

May well be.

I think the relevant question from a revenue standpoint is whether you net more visitors and spend in Athens by coupling parents weekend with a football game, or separating the two. How much excess capacity at Peden are we suggesting would be filled by parents? What are there -- 2000 empty seats? I would hope that's a drop in the bucket relative to what parents weekend draws independently.

My sense of it is the objective should be to fill the calendar with as many reasons to attract visitors to Athens as possible.

Reminds me of why no wrestling companies ever put the world title belt around the waist of Andre the Giant. It wasn't because his waist was too big for the belt. Instead, they figured he alone sold tickets to live events as does the world title holder. Why waist one of those draws by combining them with one wrestler?

Besides being good for Ohio in this regards, this is a very fair MAC schedule for all MAC teams. Six teams have no short week (Kent, Miami, Ohio, CMU, NIU, and WMU). Four teams have a single game that is on 6 days rest, but against an opponent also on a six day week (Akron-EMU and BG-Toledo will be on a six day week for all teams). Only two teams will play on a six day week against an opponent on a seven day week, those been Buffalo (against EMU) and Ball State (against NIU). Even better, no teams play on a 5 day week, ever.

Kudos to the MAC for their scheduling. I hope they have finally figured out how to do this, and can be this fair to everyone from now on.

Schedule is fan friendly but hardly a formula for an easy repeat. and every year after an East title has been a big letdown generally. Maybe we can end multiple jinxes this year, but who knows.

Akron has a very good coach, and they improved a lot from the beginning of the year to the end. Ohio was the only MAC game where Akron lost by much. I expect Akron to be much better this fall, and in the top half of the MAC. The final game will be no gimmee.

this is a gross oversimplification. After all, based on 2021, we should have been a pushover for anyone in 2022, right?

The above statement is correct. NI went winless in the conference the year before they won the MAC a couple of seasons ago. Ohio was 3-5 in 2021 in the league, but ended up 7-1 and with the best overall record in the conference during the regular season in 2022. Toledo will be picked to win the West again in 2023, but most conference schools are pretty even, especially when the transfer portal is considered.

I think Toledo will be a near unanimous pick to win the conference and not just the West. But you would have said the same thing Northern Illinois after the 2021 season when they had most contributors back. We saw what happened to the 2022 Huskies. But that was also a team that was affected by injuries in a way that happens maybe once in a generation. They probably think of 2022 the way we think of 2012. I agree with the notion that they should be one of the best teams in the MAC and there is a good chance we will be an underdog on the road.

Does anybody know why we're perennially starting MAC play on the road? Russ complained about last season making 11(?) straight years that we opened MAC play on the road, and sure enough here we are again this season starting at BG. I'm not sure if it matters much but you'd think the law of averages would get us a home opener in MAC play at least once a decade. (My eyesight isn't very good these days, so I just skim over the longer posts and threads. If this has already been discussed, I apologize.)

Probably because homecoming is almost always week 6, so we probably open the conference season on the road in week 5... most years. just a guess.

Just kidding you, Casper71. But, I'm waiting for OhioBobcat to predict 14-0, including beating Wisconsin in a NY6 bowl. Personally, I think this team is going to be very good -- maybe 11-3 or 10-4 is possible.
