There is no such thing as a good football team that can't get pressure from its front four on defense and that can't run the ball between the tackles on offense.

You can be bad at one of those two things and still win. You can't be bad at both. Ohio is awful at both right now.

While the defensive line has some excuse with its injuries, there's no excuse other than a lack of toughness for not being able to run between the tackles. This is an experienced offensive line with relatively experienced running backs.

The passing game is fine if it had support from the running game.

The numbers looks okay at 4.3 yards per carry on Saturday, but Ohio was awful on runs on second down when it needed to make first downs and make for manageable third downs.

On second and long plays, Ohio ran it six times for 16 yards. On second and mediums it ran it twice for 0 yards.

When the defense knows Ohio is likely to run the ball, it stops the run. That has to change.

actually i can't figure out why the offense performed so poorly. the defense took their lumps but the 23 points is where the rubber meets the road and I'm okay with that, hoping the backups continue to improve. Scoring only 20 points at home against that team is where I have a real problem. Our offense remains experienced and healthy, so my greatest concern is that everyone has figured out our gimmick and things might get worse before we can adjust.

I don't think the offense performed that poorly. It gained 413 yards on just 61 plays. The turnovers, field position and missed FG and XP impacted the number of points scored. Obviously, the turnovers are on the offense. But Ohio's four 4th-quarter possessions started on the Ohio 20, 6, 1 and 5-yard lines.

Our goal should be to win the MAC, not go to a bowl. The bowls we play in are nothing to get excited about. There are so many bowls today that they are meaningless. It's just like hoops playing in the CIT.

Thank you.

This is my biggest concern. Our heralded offensive line is not showing up. Too often we are unable to run between tackles. Too often our quarterback is running for his life. Too often our special teams punter/kicker has defenders in his face. Where is this highly ranked offensive line?

SBH:  I prefer to cheer hard the entire game.  I believe a rowdy crowd can lift up the spririts of a flat team.  Maybe it would have made a difference on 3rd down a few times in the first two quarters.  I can literally count the entire number of folks making noise on 3rd down by standing up and looking around me.  That is just pathetic.  I just think the eleven on the field deserve as much support during the game as we show the 110 during halftime...

Good point. Fan support and how the team play are a chicken and egg thing. When the team is playing well, the fans are into the game, and they feed intensity back to the players, such as at the Marshall game. In other games the team may be flat, and the fans quiet, which in turn doesn't inspire the players. That is why "cheerleaders" were invented, actually. The idea of cheerleaders is to get the crowd loud, and thus in turn will inspire the players to play better. As fan support moved from 100-500 fans in close proximity to the cheerleaders to 24,000 or more fans, most far from the cheerleaders, it becomes more and more difficult to get the fans to be loud when the team is flat. Ideas like Thundersticks were created for precisely that reason, but they can't be used every game.

Make no mistake, though, loud fans can inspire better play from the players, particularly the defense. Furthermore, close games when the players are not playing their best is exactly the time when loud fans can make the most difference. As an individual fan, the best place to start, I think, is by yelling for defense while the opponents are at the line, particularly on third down. Hopefully others near you will join in.

The bowls that MAC teams play in are like participation trophies - everyone who goes 6 and 6 and beats a 1 AA team gets one.  From a fan standpoint though a bowl in a warm climate on a weekend that includes golf, a good meal or two and a little local color can be a good time.  Mobile was that kind of good time.

Let's not forget that practice time either.

Other than the outcome, Mobile was awesome,  If the details lined up again, I would not hesitate to go back.
