A last thought about football tonight for me.  Just looking over the numbers for the 3 games available so far-it's horrendous.  If there was ever an argument that the MAC is doomed in the FBS-attendance proves it.  More tomorrow.

It matters to the NCAA - may not make sense, but it holds us and others back (not that we don't hold ourselves back anyway)

Expound, JSF.  Attendance is not everything but I'd think it translates to program attractiveness and TV which are about everything.

Why start this thread after a win today?  This information is so old and has been beaten to death.  We get it, the MAC attendance is bad.  It has been for the 20 years I have followed Ohio football and I am sure long before that.  They haven't kicked us out yet and I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I am going to focus my attention on what matters and that is a win against Temple in 10 days.

The rule that the NCAA has in place for attendance is not enforced like it could be. If it were enforced, EMU would have lost FBS status a long time ago based on their average attendance numbers. In fact, there used to be a rule on stadium size as well where your stadium had to seat at least 25,000 patrons. Ohio would have been ineligible in this case since Peden only seats 24,000. I believe that rule has been done away with however, and the only thing counted as far as attendance goes is a once every two year requirement on a rolling basis that you average 15,000 at your home games. No way EMU has come close to that.

That rule was to have a 30,000 seat stadium or average 17,000 in attendance once every four years. Ohio pre-Grobe was drawing about like Ball State 9,000-10,000. The design then came out for a 30,000 seat Peden Stadium to meet the requirement and that was partially why the school expanded from 20,000 to 24,000 seats in 2001 to take the school a step closer to meeting that 30,000 seat requirement. That seating requirement was eliminated 5-6 years ago and the overall attendance mark was lowered to 15,000. Since that time several stadiums across the MAC have downsized from 30,000. Miami, BG and Kent State all had 30,000 seats with endzone bleachers. Miami and BG reduced to 23-24k with renovations and Kent State dropped all the way back to 20,500. Since the rule for stadium size has gone away, the defacto standard for an entry level FBS program has become 25,000 seats. That gives a program plenty enough capacity to meet that 15,000 requirement. Eastern Michigan's 30,000 seat stadium was a byproduct of the 30,000 seat rule and because they made the entire stadium permanent seating they can't unfortunately downsize to something in the low 20's.

I should clarify.  I was referring to NCAA as it matters to the college game right now, not to an organization.  My bad for not being clear.

Attendence is meaningless is kind of like saying your paycheck is meaningless.  Tell that to the guys getting paid-like the athletic department.  If there is no real interest as expressed by your attendance, something has to eventually give.

The attendance wouldn't be dog crap if we played halfway decent teams at home in the OOC to create a buzz....

The whole situation has become a joke.

What your missing is the biggest determining factor of whether or not a school is playing at the FCS or FBS level. That factor is having at least a 20-25k stadium with modern pressboxes, broadcast quality lighting and some other trimmings. With a few exceptions schools playing in FCS don't have the facility to do so at the next level. As soon as they have that facility they are clammoring to join the ranks of FBS. Western Kentucky was FCS. They found money to expand the stadium to 25,000 seats with a big modern pressbox homestand expansion. Now they're playing in FBS. Every school in the MAC since the early 90's has dropped 10 million+ into their stadium to get it up to FBS expectations. The schools have the stadiums up to par so they'll stay in FBS. When a school can't afford a stadium upgrade they'll drop back a level or drop the sport. Or find an NFL stadium to play their games at. Fan support in that stadium is of secondary importance to the overall facility itself.

Where is the evidence? In 2009 the Cats played UConn at home in front of 25,000 then playing competitively. The next Bobcat home game playing against Cal Poly the crowd was only 16,000. The Cats are having one of their best home attendance years after one of their weakest OOC schedules ever. One option would be to not play money games on the road and try for a 7th home game in the stadium every other year against a lower tier BCS program. Play 2 BCS programs equivalent to Kansas and Indiana in strength every year home and away to ensure 1 BCS name in the stadium every season. I'm not sure if that would help attendance significantly. Could it be something where that game against the SBC or WAC school is subbed out for a quality series against a low level BCS then shoot for a really major opponent as the payday. Rutgers wasn't payday grade material for where the program is at. Give the players a chance to go up against Texas, Notre Dame, USC some of the biggest names in football for the payday game. Rutgers, Minnesota and Kentucky don't cut it.
