Yesterday, as I was sitting in my car outside the stadium prior to the game I received an email on my iPhone (no BL that's not the same thing as an android phone) from Matt, a friend in Illinois. He knows that I'm an Ohio fan, but he has no personal connection with Ohio. He and I have met in person once -- at the annual Civil War Collectors Show in Mansfield, Ohio, this year. Prior to that we've had an internet friendship and had exchanged information on our ancestors' regiments (78th Ohio and 30th Illinois) because they were on the March to the Sea together in the 3rd Division of the 17th Corps as well as other information of interest only to Civil War buffs. At any rate, Matt said he saw the game was coming up on ESPN and was going to watch. After the game was over we exchanged a few emails.
His first to message to me after the game said:
"YESSSS!
What a fun game to watch! Bowl eligible! Go Bobcats!
How can you get such great national publicity any other way? Yes, on rare occasions you can get international headlines and lead stories on all the major TV news networks from scientific research. In the last 30+ years this has happened to Ohio University exactly once -- when we announced the first transfer of a functioning gene from one mammalian species to another. For some more information on this story please read the first paragraph under "research" when you
. But, on a regular basis you can only build up significant positive name recognition through a well-developed athletic program in the major collegiate sports of football and basketball.

I have a similar story. I have a friend from my time in DC (yes, it was something like a prison sentence) who was best man at my wedding. He now lives in Arkansas and called during the 3rd Q last night to give me a little grief about the SEC but also to praise the job Solich has been doing at OU and to cheer on the Cats. If it weren't for the ESPN telecasts, he probably wouldn't know much about the team. The TV is gold.

Yes, and proud of it. I'm also an amateur radio nerd, a computer nerd, and a genealogical nerd. So, I'm a nerd four times over and counting. Can any bobcatattackers top that?

I had SMS immediately after the game from a friend who is Toledo alum/ex FBall player - said "Go Bobcats". Shows they love the national exposure for the MAC.

Being on ESPN -- and to a lesser extent ESPN2 -- is great PR.
Being on ESPNU does nothing.
Thank God for the NBA lockout.

On the other hand, a godawful game played in front of a marching band, 32 parents and 12 fans like last night's tilt in Oxford does nothing but damage the reputation of league and both teams involved. Even the artful
prestidigitation of ESPN's camera crew could not hide a literally empty stadium.

More people on the sidelines than in the stands in Oxford last night. I know it rained, but come on.

Emails from several sales reps..."congratulations on the big win" etc....what, like *I* had anything to do with it? But still...people notice.

OCF, you are a Double Nerd Squared! By virtue of being able to compute that, I'm a nerd, too! (But I'm not going to try to top DNS, which you, of course, would know is the acronym for .... )

RJ, that was a packed house compared to the UCF-UAB game a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham, which was on the CBS college sports channel. And the winless team won. Not sure if that was a bigger embarrassment for C-USA or the Big East, where UCF apparently is headed.

Did ESPN in any of its newscasts show the slow-mo replay of LaVon's catch in which you can clearly see that he had it, it jumped away, then he grabbed it back? I thought that was a fine catch until I saw that replay. Then I thought it was a great catch.

The next morning around 6:30, and after only about 6 hours of sleep, I awoke and was watching sports center like always do every morning and there we were with high lights and some real good coverage and commentary.
No doubt it was a slow night for sports, but still, great coverage and probably more coverage and on air time than normal.

It was on SC right after the game and is on the highlight reel on the website:

The MAC is putting way to many games on TV. What was KSU-CMU last night ESPN2? Why can't we have these midweek games spread out more across October instead of all bunched together.

The only thing the MAC is doing is putting too few fans in the stands. The biggest problem with MAC football is the students and alums of the schools themselves. "we are our own worst enemy".

The murder row schedules some of these MAC schools are playing doesn't help matters. Its a vicious cycle. When the school is blown out by Michigan and Alabama nobody wants to see you play NC Central at home. MAC schools should avoid those type of games unless you've got the program at the level of Toledo or Northern Illinois. Not enough winning to generate support across the league.

World Series.
Most of these games would have been on ESPNU were it not for the NBA lockout (reminds me, I need to send thankyou notes to the NBPA and the NBA owners...). I think our game was originally scheduled for ESPN2

I thought the Sun Belt had midweek games during October?

Fair point.
I guess what I was trying to say is that these games aren't spread out through October is because ESPN doesn't want to air them spread out through October (and ESPN is the only reason to have mid-week games)
