Football-Bowl.com just updated their 2011-2012 bowl projections adding the Ohio Bobcats (finally). I guess they didn't like us after those losses to Ball State and Buffalo and it took the Temple win to put Ohio back on their radar.

The Go Dad has number 1 pick this year not the Pizza Bowl. Ohio takes an offer to the Potato Bowl because they haven't played in it before.

Curious.  Can Eastern Michigan still get a bowl invitation if two of their victories were against D-1A (or whatever they are called now) schools?  Thought you could only have one on your schedule and still make a bowl?

Wes, this is the bowl that the athletics department said they hoped they wouldn't get last year.  My guess is that their feelings are the same this year especially in light of their need to raise funds for the multi-purpose center.

It just means they'll need 7 wins instead of 6 to become eligible.

Doesn't the Spud Bowl have a better payout than the other MAC bowls now that the Idaho Potato farmers are financing it?  I thought that I read that somewhere.  If true, it might change our attitude, if we could actually make a little money on it, rather than a pay-to-play scenario.

Edit: I tried to look up the payouts.  One list I found had a payout for the GoDaddy of  $1.5 million, which I think is double what the old GMAC Bowl paid.  On this same list neither the Spud nor the Pizza bowl listed any payout, as though the information was not available.

According to this site, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl pays out $750,000. GoDaddy and Little Ceasar's are the same.

Well, this site says $1.5 million for GoDaddy and doesn't list any payout for the other two MAC bowls -- Pizza and Spud. Another site I looked at had $750,000 for Spud and Pizza, but said the figures were for 2008.  Don't know why all the confusion.

The fact that Spudsville is an early season bowl game is easier on the student athletes is another positive over the almost mid January GMAC.

Mutually Exclusive, Swankster? In no way does going to the Potato Bowl have an impact on the department's ability to raise funds for the multi-purpose center.  The Bowl Game is budgeted for and will be used for the bowl game.  The cost savings between going to a bowl in Idaho or one in Detroit isn't going to be allocated to the multi-purpose center and has no impact on that facility.

The "payout" on some of these bowls is misleading.  Many smaller bowl games give you a payout in the form of tickets.  So for Detroit you get $750,000 worth in tickets and you keep what you sell.  For every ticket you don't sell in your allotment, your payout drops.

I believe Spud gives the MAC participant 300,000 in straight cash unlike the other MAC bowls so while its further travel expenses are covered.

I believe you are correct.  I am fairly certain, due to the distance and travel costs, that the MAC negotiated a minimum cash payout for that bowl in order to keep it from being a money vaccum.  I would actually think that the money made by the MAC team in that game is typically equivalent, if not higher, than in the other bowl games.  I mean we might have come close to selling half of our ticket allotment for Detroit a couple years ago, but I would say we probably came up short of that.  This year, I think we could sell far more because it isn't at noon the day after xmas.
