I'm a religious New York Times crossword puzzler. After completing the puzzle, I love to read the news and notes to learn about the constructor of the puzzle, which is an impressive form of art. When I finished the Saturday puzzle, there was a clue for 1A (first clue in the entire puzzle) that said, "Turnovers in a football field, perhaps?" I wasn't able to solve it for quite a while, taking many of the down clues to fill it in. Finally, the answer came up as 'Cartwheels'. I was a bit confused, but it fit. When I read through the notes, I was more than a little surprised to see a reference in the NY Times for Hagen Meservy and OHIO football. Not sure if this is blocked by the paywall or not, but here's the link to the notes, paying homage to the great playcall from OHIO where Hagen did a cartwheel out wide to distract the defense:
