Anybody else think it is curious that when BG went ahead 20-19 they did NOT go for 2? The extra point didn't help them as it put them up 21-19. And in the end, they needed that other point.

If they don't make it and get the following TD, they are only up 27-19 instead of the 28-19. By just kicking the XP, they force Ohio to get two scores. Had they gone for 2 and made it, then I think Ohio would have pushed the issue of scoring a game-winning TD at the end vs. settling for the FG.

A math whiz I met figured a team should NEVER go for a two point conversion anytime during the game unless it is to tie on the last conversion by the team at the end of the game. His stats show it doesn't pay to go for two--ever. Hunches sometimes pay off but the prudent coach plays the odds over the long term.

Wow...I'm no math major but in football being up by one OR two makes no difference. You don't know what will happen next. Make or miss the XP and a FG beats you if you assume the scoring is done. So kicking does not help you. The two would have made an ensuing FG a tie game. As for missing on the two pointer, the next TD and XP does put you up 8. That requires a TD and two pointer just to tie. I still don't see the value of going for one in that poistion but I'd love to see one of the little cards that tells you what you should do there.
As for the math guy...well, a lot of teams go for two when NOT in the situation he describes.
No matter how you slice it, if they had gone for and made the 2 pt conversion at 20-19, we would have to have a TD to beat them. They let us off the hook by only needing a FG to WIN and we did it.

Slow day...here is Dick Vermeil's two point chart. He says if you are up by one you go for two...just an interesting discusiion point.

I think most coaches will go for the extra point unless it is very late in the game. Had BG gone for two and failed, Ohio could have tied with the touchdown scored after that. You have to like your chances with less than one quarter to go of making the oppossing team get at least two scores. It didn't work out for BG this time, but it was the right thing to do.
