For those of you who may not remember, today is the anniversary of the Marshall plane crash.

I live in northern N.J. and several members of that team were from around here.I still remeber it like it was yesterday.

One of the victims was from Cuyahoga Falls High School, near our home.  Strangely, they never posted a plaque or other memorial.  I remember the crash very vaguely, and only because one of my father's co-workers and friends was a former Marshall player from the late 1950s.

RPBobcat:

Thank you for starting this thread.  It is a reminder for all of us to keep the wins and losses in sports in proper perspective.

One of the victims was Dr. Ray Hagley who had become a mentor for Jim Grobe following the earlier death of Coach Grobe's father.

Thanks for starting this thread.   As the regulars on this board know, I was on the journalism faculty at Marshall in 1970.  I was co-adviser to The Parthenon, the student newspaper.  Our sports editor, Jeff Nathan, was killed in the crash.  Recently, I started a drive to endow a sportswriting scholarship in Jeff's name.  So far we've raised about $4,500 of the $15,000 we need to endow this scholarship.  If any BobcatAttacker would like to donate, you can send your contribution to:

The Marshall University Foundation
519 John Marshall Drive
Huntington, WV 25703

Specify that your donation is for the Jeff Nathan Memorial Sportswriting Scholarship. Make checks payable to the Marshall University Foundation.

Here's a Facebook page started by Jeff's brother Don about the scholarship efforts:  Jeff Nathan Sportswriting Scholarship.

And Dr. Hagley gave me my physical for my first job.  So sad, those of us who had connections to Marshall will never forget that tragedy.

My mother was a friend with Dr. Hagley's mother. I don't think I ever saw Mrs. Hagley smile after the crash. Losing a child is a terrible event for a parent.  Also, 29 children were made orphans with the plane crash.
