I am quite concerned about our defense during the next two games.  There is no doubt that our offensive numbers have remained consistent and provided great wins.  Now we are going to face two teams that have more than adequate passing QB's with not too great of running games.

We have faced QB's that have been just average and our defense has made them appear to be above average. What is going to happen when we face these next two QB's.  We have not shown that we are a good blitzing team with good packages.  Our DB's are not great tacklers and they have illustrated that they cannot play man to man defenses.  And that is important when using blitz packages. We have not had an interception for the past few games when playing zone or cover 2 packages. What do we do?

That is my concern.  Do we have the defensive packages that can disrupt these passing games? If we do, do we have the necessary personnel to play those packages?  If not, then we will have score one heck of a lot of points.  Just one more than they do!!

Looking foward to two great wins!!

Ranking of passers vs MAC competition
Ryan Radcliff  #!--so our D has faced a successful QB
Zac Dysert  #3
Matt Schliz  #5

Rushing O vs MAC opponents
Miami #13 (dead last)
BGSU # 11
CMU was 9th

So it would appear on paper that the three opponents are similar in their ability to attack OUr defense and all have quality receivers.

On the flipside is that OUr offense will be facing stiffer opposition as Miami is ranked #1 against the pass (before they face WMU with the #2 ranked passer)  and BGSU is #5 with CMU ranked 10th.  Versus the run in conference play: Miami is ranked #7, CMU 8th and BGSU is 11th.

OUr running attack against #2 Temple was high octane and continued so at CMU where our third back went over 100 and QB stopped running because wasn't needed.  So the O needs to keep opening the holes and grinding the other D down.  TT needs to shake off the one or two bad throws per game so that there are no picks and the backs cover the ball like recent games so the D is not put in quick score areas of the field.

BGSU has a top Sack Man in Chris Jones so the O-Line will need to continue fine protection and the run keep us out of having frequent passing downs and being in the lead is an obvious benefit.

I'm not sure this answers your questions about the defense, but while it hasn't been perfect, Ohio is one of the better defenses in the MAC. Here are the MAC Only Football Stats.

Ohio is fourth in points scored, and fourth in points given up. They are also fourth in total offense, and fourth in yards given up.

A solid MAC D against two MAC schools near the bottom offensively. I'm not concerned at all.

Kent State plays a physical brand of ball. Neither BG nor my Miami have that profile.

Martin's teams always  caused trouble for Frank. The games were always close and hard fought.
2005 - Ohio wins 35-32
2006 - Ohio wins 17-7
2007 - Kent 33-25
2008 - Ohio 26-19
2009 - Kent 20-11
2010 - Kent 6-28

Then add to those hard fought games the emotion related to Martin's firing (which I didn't think was deserved), and Kent wins. This will be the first game against Treadwell at Miami, so there is no telling how things will go. Last year Frank beat BG/Clawson 49-25, however, so that's a positive sign.

Kent produced a lot of NFL talent in the decade that Doug Martin was there as HC and assistant after a long successful stint under Steve Logan as the Offensive Coordinator of East Carolina. A lot of speed at Kent in the LB unit and they were few teams in the MAC that always had a running quarterback as part of the offense. This year's Kent edition is starting to look like an old Martin team down the stretch here and could upset Temple.

This thread reminds me of a Saturday Night Live sketch. I won't post the name of it, because it's not especially family friendly, but it involved Christopher Walken as a Confederate Colonel. You can Google it if you really want to know more.
