I must say that I was a little amazed at this hirring. Not for New Mexico but for Davie. I would imagine that if he had wanted to get back into coaching that he would have had better offers than the Lobos. Good luck too him but I really see this program being a way harder climb than Solich. 

I always get the sense that Western US schools have a harder time recruiting because of the quality of schools. Similar to the SEC, the schools that populate the WAC, in particular, have a hard time attracting much over 1 or 2 star recruit. OHIO has had an easier turn around due to Solich's pedigree and the fact that the majority of the schools in the region are either elite programs (BIG10) or MAC schools that OHIO has been able to complete well against, especially recruiting wise.

The fact of the matter is, the South is where the vast majority of top talent is. OHIO has done a good job of reaching down into Tennessee, Georgia and even Florida, spreading out their message and getting well schooled talent; that is something Davie will have a hard time overcoming.

I don't know, the bar is set pretty low at New Mexico. If I recall correctly Davie IS replacing a guy who, in the course of losing approximately 56 games over 3 seasons, was suspended for punching a guy ON HIS OWN STAFF and for a sexual harrassment case within the athletic department. That sort of thing buys him a little leeway: he probably doesn't need to win the MWC every year, just 3-4 games a year. Or at least win the I-AA* portion of the schedule.



*I know, I know, its supposed to be called FCS now. I just think FCS/FBS is stupid and will continue to use I-A/I-AA.

New Mexico has a lot going for it-a short plane ride from west coast  or Texas, good weather, medium size city, no pro sports, no directional school, and with the upcoming defections from the MWC-no real power houses left.  I don't know about academics, endowment, student population, etc, but I think the right coach could make that  a winning situation.
