You know, I'm always antsy when a team puts their fate in the hands (or foot) of a kicker.  But Weller really stepped up last night.  On a night when the team couldn't finish drives and needed him the most, he came up big.  Five FGs -- a new OU record, I think -- and after every one (except the last), his reaction was "no big deal; just another day at the office."  If there's a better kicker in college football, I haven't seen him.  Way to go Matt.

EDIT:  Didn't think about this until sometime today.  He hit a FG as time ran out in the 1st half to the give Cats the lead, then hit another one as time ran out for the game to give them the win.  Mr. Clutch.

He had his clutch miss this year and the rest of the season is in preferential conditions. I like this mans leg.

It was even more impressive considering the difficulty that each team was having getting distance on kickoffs and punts. I think Weller was the only part of special teams for either team that worked last night. Go Bobcats!

Other than a block at Kent, his only miss from inside 45 yards was the one at Ball State. His other misses are 46,47,48, and 53, and you'd have to think most kickers are going to miss from that distance. I know he can make one from that range, though.

Our biggest worry on FGs isn't whether Weller will make it or not, but if our line can keep us from getting blocked.  I would say 75% of Weller's misses have been from blocked FGs and last night we got lucky that BG somehow was too quick to block one of our FGs.

In contrast, Miami is 2 of 5 for the SEASON on field goals. Haven't made one since September 24th. And last night missed a 22-yarder on their opening possession in a game they lost 24-21.

That may be one of the reasons that they only score 22 points or so per game.  If they had a reliable kicker, I'm guessing that they would have 3-6 points more per game.

"Oh me of such little faith."

I was at the game.  With two MAC losses in mind I couldn't bring myself to watch the kick.

Weller for PRESIDENT!!!!!

Yes, one by Akron, one by Miami, and one by Kent. Only one has been blocked this year. Interestingly all the blocks have been longer kicks - the shortest being a 37 yarder. Maybe he takes a little longer on the long ones?

The angle of trajectory is a little lower.  Happens to all kickers.

Twinsburg's gonna have two NFL kickers in a year and change. Crazy.

Miami went seven games without even ATTEMPTING a FG. Also crazy.

You can't discount the effect of the line, the snapper and the holder. No doubt the kicker has to execute as well, but if a kicker has all the other elements, his job is infinitely easier.
