Kind of curious what others think about the influence that the PSU scandal might have on the NCAA's attitude toward the violations at A&M.

The results so far surprise me a tad.  I thought that "easier" would get some votes.

Not after this...

Bobcat36,

Is "failure to monitor" roughly at the USC level?  I'm not exactly clear on the seriousness of this charge relative to what other programs have received recently.

Little surprised as well...The PSU thing DWARFS the Miami(FL) thing, which had already made OSU seem like a small time problem.

OCF,

USC was hit with the Lack of Institutional Control violation.  While Failure to Monitor is severe it's still a step below LoIC.  That being said, all of the lies told by the A&M Administration in the very beginning, combined with the "we've uncovered and addressed everything...oh no wait a minute...just one more violation" scenarios can't be doing them any favors in the eyes of the Committee on Infractions.

DiGeronimo has been "employing" players for 30 years and he's a serious powder keg at this point.  On top of being disassociated, he's currently bristling (and speaking publicly) about the "lies" Gene Smith is telling about him and his history with the program.

It could very well get even worse before the NCAA hearing...

But isn't the compliance department at osu Inc. a shining example of what every school's compliance department should be like? At least according to the bow-tie president?

Thanks for the clarification, BC36.  Regardless, I think the NCAA will hit them with more than their self-imposed penalties.

I would be very surprised if they didn't.  If they go around letting schools dictating their own punishment, it would probably make the NCAA look bad.

This also explains why the universities give themselves less severe penalties.  If the NCAA is going to hit them hard anyway, set your self imposed penalties a few notches below what you think the NCAA will so that they won't hand down a punishment tougher than what they would have said anyway.

Heard this argument on Common Man and the Torque one day; good points I think.

Would not be surprised if TO$U decides that this would be a good year to self-impose a postseason ban.

Yeah, I would not be surprised if they did the same given the fact that a BCS Bowl Game is out of the question and the bowl payouts for the level of bowl game OSU would be invited to this year is pennies to them. I think we get closer to the Michigan game and they indeed announce their self-imposed bowl ban and the NCAA will as a result come down much easier on them.

NCAA has announced they're investigating PSU for lack of institutional control and unethical behavior. The question of whether the NCAA will be involved or not is answered.

If the Penn State athletic dept. was involved with covering up evidence, the NCAA should not show any mercy, regardless of how much money PSU makes them.  They'll have their way with them.

A friend from Pennslyvania says they are hearing rumblings about the death penalty.
