I don't think anyone is really dumping on USU.  Most fans are not happy about our last game, nor do we want to go to Boise.  As far as the match up, USU is 7-5 and barely beat the only common opponent we had this year, which Ohio handled easily.  We aren't excited about this bowl game at all, but wouldn't be offended at all if USU felt the exact same way.

I don't think folks are negative about USU, just about the Spud Bowl.  When teams that finished lower than Ohio in the MAC standings get better bowls that are easier for our fans to get to in terms of both distance and date you'll find some folks not to happy.

Some of us do remember the 5-0 beating Utah State gave us in 1995 in Athens.  It was played in a total downpour all game and is widely considered one of the worst games Ohio ever played in one our worst seasons ever. Some of us are hoping to even the score this year.

Just guessing:

They're not an AQ.

They're from a sparsely populated state in the west.

They're not BYU or Utah.

They haven't been to a bowl game since 1997, and they still have a better bowl record than we do (1-4).

They have "State" in their name.

Like New Mexico State, they are Aggies; we begin and end the season with Aggies.

It's not so much the school, but the disappointment of going to a bowl game that's 2500 miles away in a perceived boring town on the first day of the bowl season when only "less important" bowls are played because of the meltdown in Detroit that we haven't yet gotten over.

I don't have any problem playing Utah State, it's just I'd rather (as well as most of us) have it in a place more easily accessible to our fans (the location and timing is very crappy).  Some people here do want that bigger opponent, not that we're stuck up and think too highly of ourselves but more because we want to see how far this team has come (we used to be the dregs of our conference so this isn't us rebuilding but actually just building).

I have absolutely NO disrespect towards USU. I've just NEVER been a fan of the Siberia Bowl and can't figure out why the MAC is affiliated with the bowl to begin with. I don't care if it was LSU who we were paired against, ANY MAC school that has to truck their _ssets to Boise in mid-December is a money LOSING experience, veiled as a reward.

Makes NO sense whats-so-ever, for OHIO or ANY MAC school.

You can add, they "stole" the Winning Team, Losing Team cheer. ;)

Yeah, I don't think it's about USU as much as it is about Boise.. And I've been to Boise. Boise is a cool, thriving city, but it's about impossible to get to Boise from here without spending a fortune.

I'm sure USU and Ohio have a lot in common when it comes to being the lesser known of the so-called major instate colleges. I hope it's a great game.

We respect Utah State!

We respect the players on the Ohio University team and their overall effort.

You have to understand that we are the only MAC school who has been a member of the league since 1968 who has not won the MAC Championship. Before Jim Grobe, we endured 17 wins over a ten year period. To "Lay Such an Egg" in the second half Friday is very frustrating.

Yes, there were some plays in the second half our players did not make, but it is mostly the poor coaching and overall strategy that has us frustrated us. We had two solid running backs that have produced most of the games with yards up the middle, with yards after contact and they did not get a single carry Friday. Instead we watched a bunch of low percentage passes that stopped the clock and gave NIU the chance to win the game on the last play.

At last count there were 119 Division 1 teams which means that 59% of all the teams go to a Bowl Game including 6-7 UCLA. I love football but feel there are way too many bowl games. Going to a Bowl in 2011 does not have the same meaning as going to a Bowl 20 years ago.

Part of our frustration is wondering why the MAC has this deal with a game so far away, not the team we are playing.

Most of us understand the challenge of being an administrator or coach for a MAC school. There are budget challenges and challenges recruiting. If Eastern Michigan, Buffalo and Akron can win a MAC Title, there is no reason that we should not do the same.

It is great we have beaten our arch rival the past six years. Just a couple of years ago it looked like their program was headed to the bottom of the MAC for a few years and yet they won their 7th conference title last year since 1968.

As someone posted on another thread, Alumni like us would remember a win last Friday off and on in the future years, but for the players, there will be few if any days they don't think about the lost opportunity. I could see the pain in the face of Noah Keller after the game at the press conference and feel bad for him and the team.

I hope that both teams play their best football with Ohio winning so each player on each team (in particular the Seniors) will feel they put forth their best effort with no regrets. While this game has a touch of being anti-climatic for some of us, we know this game is very important to the players and their families and we should not forget that.

Thanks for visiting with us and we look forward to posting with you guys the next couple of weeks.
