did somebody say we're paying Solich 650k/ I don't think so.

OU paid him $460,800 in 2010.

I think Uncle Wes was projecting down the road several years, assuming Frank stays a while longer and the team continues to improve.

Colorado State with a 26.8 million dollar budget roughly the same size of Ohio has signed their new head coach for 1.35 per season + 150k in bonuses. Based on the OHIO commitment to athletics I wouldn't be surprised if Frank's base salary was elevated above 650k as soon as next year. He's been making in the mid 500's counting incentives the past couple of seasons. Beyond football salaries Ohio has the wherewithal to pay significantly more for a head basketball coach than 300k. Across the MAC low basketball coaching salaries are an issue and I think its less about money and more about a lack of tradition at most schools on the national scene.

Wow, I must have been typing that earlier message in a drug induced haze.  Know.

For a moment, I thought our old friend "Marco" from the old T-Com board had hacked into your account.  He was always confused between "are" / "our" and "their / there".

There was a more detailed article in the post at the time talking about Frank's 10% bonuses of his base salary for winning a bowl or the MAC and 5% for winning the MAC East. His contract states 400,000 of guaranteed income and people are usually prorating his retention bonus (75k a year) on top of this to calculate his compensation (stated as 475k on the contracts site). The 460k figure listed by the other poster likely included the bonuses but excluded the retention bonus so counting retention Frank was 535k last year and 556k this year for 9 wins and an East title. If Frank can win a bowl that is another automatic 10% plus hitting 10 wins would bump him to 600k on the season.

The wins bonus is for regular season wins. Not sure how you're calculating your numbers Wes but the math is below.

So he gets:
$330K Salary
$30K for Bobcats Sports Network/Coaches Show
$30K for Associate Athletic Director role
$10K from Russell for shoe contract
$400K in guaranteed money

Bonuses:
$275K if he's still the coach on December 31, 2012 ($55K per year if you amortize over the 5-year agreement)
5% of base salary for winning the MAC East ($16,500)
10% of base salary for winning MAC Title game ($33,000)
10% of base salary for winning Bowl game ($33,000)
$100K for being selected for a BCS game
$25K for Top 25 ranking at end of season
$10K for MAC Coach of the Year
$25K for National Coach of the Year
$45K in cumulative regular season incentives ($5,000 each for wins 7 through 9 and $10,000 each for wins 10 through 12)

For 2011:
$400K guaranteed
$55K pro-rata amount of retention bonus
$16.5K for winning MAC East
$15K for regular season wins

TBD: $33K for Bowl win

Ted there are a couple of other bonuses and points to consider with Frank's compensation. The bonus for achieving a graduation rate of 86% is also 10% (33,000) and for 75% its 5% (16,500). I was figuring that 460k figure stated on here was figuring in an 86% percent retention bonus along with 8 wins and not the pro rated retention bonus which is due to payout on July of 2012. Another number in that 460k I figuring is an annual raise of 3.5% of the contract base amount which was evident on his first contract with the university. Frank could be up as high as 360k in 2011 on the base salary due to cost of living increase, for a guaranteed salary of 430k, 485k with the retention bonus, 518k with MAC East title and 9 wins, 554k with the academic bonus, 590k with a bowl win. Frank signs a new contract with Ohio and his guaranteed compensation bumps to at least 500k of of a base of at least 400,000 so all the bonuses are worth all that much more.

I looked up Groce's numbers and his first contract had a 200k base salary, 50k in media appearances, another 25,000 in perks (country club, car, cell phone) and 5,000 for a winning conference record, 10k for a MAC regular season title, 10k for winning the MAC tourney, 10k per win in the NCAA tourney. Groce made then 275k in guaranteed compensation and 20k in bonuses for the NCAA run (total 295k) in 2010. With his contract extension (note not a new contract) Groce received a 50k raise onto his base. Groce is then guaranteed 325k with the ability to pick up another 30k in bonuses if he wins the MAC regular season title, MAC tourney, and makes the second round in the NCAA's. Groce wins the NCAA title this season he'll pick up 400k counting bonuses.

Did you read the contract? There is no longer a bonus for graduation rate. It was deleted as part of the 2008 amendment.

There was an article in The Post at the time that detailed a few of the other bonuses and graduation rate was included. I wasn't able to find the original source. This is all very much moot because the larger point is that Frank is compensated well compared with other non-AQ and MAC programs and secondly that OHIO has the budget to compensate the football and basketball coaches sufficiently to keep them from at least moving to other non-AQ programs (unlike for example Bowling Green or Ball State). Groce returns to the NCAA and I could see his base bumped up to 400k, 500k in total compensation with more significantly sized bonuses.
