Notice one stat missing: Number of times we either took a penalty or had to use a TO because coaching staff couldn't get the play to the QB in time. The staff does deserve criticism for this issue, which was embarrassing in Boise.
You can criticize all you want but in the first year of running a difficult system that sometimes had its kinks it worked well. What isn't as obvious is when a play is changed when the defense is recognized and the result is a first down or a play for large gain. It was obvious that Utah St. was running a defense that they had not run previously even the announcers noted that. We took some time to figure out what they were doing and what to run.
Getting the snap off before the play clock expires is a pretty simple exercise. Like on the first offensive set of the 2nd half. And we were sooooo reacting to USU for the first 1 1/2 quarters. When we finally decided to get up to the line quickly and get the snap off pretty much right away, we started moving. Until that point the lack of confidence and fire that characterized the 2nd half of the NIU game was hampering us. When we took it to them with confidence, we rolled. 14 games into the year, we should have known who we were and what worked for us earlier in the game.
I think Saturday woulda been a lot less stressful if we'd've gone hard quick at USU right away and if we'd've blitzed them in some obvious situations (third and longs).
Monroe, granted call a play, line up, snap ball, run play, easy. Old school, run the ball, stop the run, win the game. You know that was Utah State's game that they actually executed very well, except they lost, outcoached by Burrow in the red zone and Albin at the finish. Now days it is cat and mouse up until the ball is snapped and given the season Ohio just finished, Albin was the cat most of the time. Monroe, who we are changes about the time tendancies might be established. Ohio's offense is balanced with threats to take advantage where favorable matchups can be created. In the bowl the offense started in a hole, played catchup the whole game and finished ahead at the end. Credit to Utah State, they are better than their record. Credit to Ohio, who beat a fine team and yes is still not where these coaches will take them. This journey is not over, hang on.
