Phil Bates had a lot to be bitter about this year after losing the starting QB competition to Tettleton.  He had come to Ohio with the expectation that he would be the starting QB.  But instead of being negative, he seemed to relish his new role as WR and backup QB.  Looking at the replay of the Tater Bowl, I noticed he was very upbeat on the sidelines.  He chatted up Robeck after his TD catch and was very supportive of the team throughout the game.  And somewhat fittingly, he sealed the win by picking off the final lateral of USU's sandlot play.  Thank you, Phil, for showing real maturity and senior leadership this season.  I hope your future is filled with great success.

Phil Bates only played briefly in the Tator Bowl and went to the locker room shortly before half with an injury. The player that picked off the lateral was #5  Leftwich who actually  plays defense.
